Jules sat in her favorite seat of her mother's café as she wrote on her facile homework. Since The Academy had to shut down for obvious reasons, she was enrolled back into regular school. It was far too easy for her. Coming out of a school for only the very best, regular schoolwork felt like kindergarten all over again. That bloody school was just a Place of Easiness. Annoyingly easy.
Jules sighed.
"Can't I just go home?", she asked her mother, looking into the hazel eyes that were passed down to her.
"No, I need help, Jules. Lunch hour is starting soon."
Jules hopelessly rolled her hazel eyes.
"Can I at least get paid today?"
"If I have money leftover after paying my actual employees. But it's Saturday, so no one wants to work."
Jules huffed and put on the local café's apron, hairnet, and hat. She stood behind the counter, waiting for the first customer of the busy lunch hour.
The first customer finally arrived for lunch hour.
It just so happened to be the one and only May Volkov.
"May!", Jules exclaimed in alarm. She wasn't expecting the pale, brunette girl. Would anyone?
"Jules!", May mirrored Jules's reaction.
"Uhm... what would you like?", Jules asked, not wanting any mention of Liam or the broken friendships to rise to the surface. It infuriated, but also made Jules upset to think about the circumstances.
May hesitated for a moment. "Just a small black coffee please."
Jules nodded. She pluked a small cup up from the neat and aesthetically pleasing stack. She proceeded to fill it with the hot, bitter, black coffee. The familiar smell flooded Jules's nostrils. It reminded her of comfort, coziness, and home.
Jules handed it to May. "Just a dollar for that."
May traded the dollar for the coffee, molding her pale, boney hands to the warm cup.
She looked at Jules for a moment.
"I didn't know that you worked here.", she said as she took a swig from her coffee.
"I don't. My mom just wanted help with lunch hour rush.", Jules acknowledged. Jules never wanted to work there. It was disorganized, and she always wanted to be a lawyer. Not work at café that offered minimum wage and an employee discount.
May nodded in understanding. "I see."
Jules glanced at the clock on the exposed brick wall.
"You should leave before we get bombarded with people," Jules advised her. Being in a small town in California, not many cafés were around. Which made "The Family Café", quite the hotspot.
May sighed. It seemed to be a trend with the freckle-faced girl.
"Okay. I hope to see you around."
And that was the last of what Jules would hear from May Volkov for a long time.
