The Place of Stupidity

Jules laid out her notes, pens, highlighters, and her chemistry textbook neatly out in front of her as she always did for her chemistry class. She was always a fan of chemistry, it always fascinated her; the way chemicals worked together to make a large reaction.

Although, the only thing she disliked about chemistry was the fact that Liam and May were in a different class. So she had nobody to relate to over the silly things that happened in that class in particular.

Jules began to highlight important lines of her notes before she heard a familiar clear of the throat. She looked up to be greeted with the face of Aziel Gry. But it wasn't his typical handsome, energetic face. He looked tired to the point of illness.

"Can I sit here?", he asked with exhaustion written all over his face and tone.

Jules glanced around in attempt to find any other empty chairs, but only found that the only empty chair was the one right next to her. The one that Aziel was asking to sit in.

"Yeah, whatever. Have a seat, your majesty," she told him sarcastically with a roll of the eyes.

"Thanks," he said with a sneer. He most certainly was not thankful. Jules watched as he sloppily laid his bookbag on the table and slouched into the chair, lacking his typical smooth, clean and sharp aura.

Jules took a deep breath and spoke up to the slouching boy.

"Why are you in this class?", she asked him with an attempt to remain patient.

"They moved me down a level in chemistry. Apparently, I was struggling," he responded with a mocking, condescending tone on the word 'struggling'.

Jules huffed.

"Aziel Gry struggling? No way," she mocked. Jules did not feel any sympathy for him. He played with her and tossed her to the side. No girl or boy ever deserves to have that happen to them in Jules's mind. Aziel Gry was only a stupid boy. He made Jules look like a desperate little girl. He put her in a Place of Stupidity in the eyes of everyone around her.

Another cute little girl thinking she has a chance?

That's my guess.

It stung Jules like an angry wasp. She had no idea why.

"Yes, I'm struggling," he sputtered, "I'm sure you're loving it."

"No comment," Jules told him.

After class, Jules was happily walking to the cafeteria. She couldn't wait to receive something for lunch, she hadn't ate breakfast that morning and skipped dinner the night before so that she could study with May.

That was, before she was stopped by a girl that Jules recognized. If only she could remember how she recognized her.

"Well, the cute little girl has a chance now."

She suddenly knew who it was; the girl that Aziel kissed after messing with her. Jules began to walk off, keeping her chin held high.

"Not so fast!", the girl quickly told her, "We broke up, go take your shot now," she told her mockingly before she walked away, her curvy hips swaying behind her.

Jules suddenly realized why Aziel was so unkept and his grades were dropping. His girlfriend broke up with him. Or he broke up with her? Either way, Jules pieced it together.

She never knew the pain of a break up. But judging by May's reaction to Nathan, it must be painful. But he died, he didn't break up with her.

Or he might be a disgusting Hyrimdote now. Who knew anymore?

Jules felt a small pang of sympathy beat in her chest for Aziel, but she quickly shoved it away before it grew. She walked to the lunch room and was greeted by waving hands that belonged to May and Liam, beckoning her to sit by them. Jules memorized the spot that they were in, got a tray of food, and sat next to the couple.

"Have you come up with any more ideas regarding the well...", Jules trailed off for a long moment. "Situation?", she finally finished.

"Yes! I have," May told her, handing her a sheet of yellowing, crippling sheet of paper.

"It is an original layout of the school, those are construction plans. Look at them," May told her with a twinkle of knowledge in her light brown eyes.

Jules looked over the crinkled sheet of paper, searching for anything that confirmed any theories that were made. She finally found something that confirmed one of May's ideas. There was a tunnel built where the moat was, and it intersected with the tunnel in the library. That must be how Nathan could've survived, he found the tunnel. There were still too many questions, though. How was the water separated from the tunnels? Why did Headmaster take so long to turn Nathan into a Hyrimdote? He could clearly turn him into one quicker, the other missing students were already turned into them, and they came after Nathan.

"This makes my head hurt," Jules told her as she passed the rotting paper back to May. She stuffed her mouth with a piece of bread.

"Me too," Liam told her as he followed suit.

May sighed as she nibbled at her own lunch.

"There is still so much to uncover and so many more questions to answer. It is almost infuriating. Every time we come up with something, another thing jumps in the way of us receiving the answers."

"I know, May," Liam told her as he attempted to talk around his food. "We have all year, though. And we have come this far already."

"But there could be more than it seems," Jules sighed.

The trio sat in silence until Jules changed the subject.

"Has Aziel Gry shown up in any of your classes?", Jules asked, allowing curiosity to get the best of her.

"Yes, he was in my history class," Liam told her.

"And my literature class," May added.

Jules waited a moment, trying to find the correct words.

"He looks rather ill, doesn't he?", she wanted confirmation that it wasn't only her ridiculous feelings.

"Yes, he looks different," May agreed.

Jules sighed and glanced back at him, he was sitting alone at an empty table, picking at his fingernails.

"You should tutor him, he told me he was struggling," Liam smirked at her.

"You're mad if you think I'll allow myself near that pit-smelling jerk," she replied, "He will not be taking my dignity," she added defensively.

But he has flooded her thoughts since their chemistry class. He already had taken her dignity. Jules only rested her chin on the wooden table and resumed consuming her lunch.
