Chapter 10
━━━━━━━━ ✥ ━━━━━━━━THE WIZENGAMOT WAS ASSEMBLED YEARS BEFORE THE MINISTRY OF MAGIC EVEN CAME TO BE, RON HAD EXPLAINED ONCE. Harry remembered listening to him intently but not really understanding the system. It sounded very complicated to him.
Hermione had told him that it was similar to the British Parliament, which wasn't the most accurate comparison. And it didn't help Harry to understand any more either.
"They hold trials there."
"Ahh." Well. She should've led with that.
Ron had also pointed out that, whereas the Ministry's head was the Minister of Magic, the Wizangamot was run by the Chief Warlock, a.k.a Albus Dumbledore.
This year, Harry learned that the Wizangamot was also where dark wizards were tried during the war. Now, Harry was no Ravenclaw, but doesn't that mean that Dumbledore had overseen those trials?
Does it mean he also oversaw Sirius' trial?
━━
There was a trial coming up. There was a break-in at the Ministry, apparently. An employee was found dead inside the Department of Mysteries, explained the newspapers, with several broken globes found in the Hall of Prophecies.
There was a suspect. A woman named Bathsheba Cornwall, whose picture didn't appear in the paper. Instead, the front page of the Daily Prophet printed the visage of Cornelius Fudge, who didn't seem very happy about the situation, at all.
"He didn't want the news out in public," cleared out Ron one night.
It was one of those nights where Harry found no sleep, and his best friend was more than happy to keep him company. As usual, Harry insisted he was fine, and as usual, Ron was able to see through his lies.
Their other roommates were sound asleep. Harry and Ron had closed the curtains of Harry's bed, going over this morning's edition of the Prophet.
"Apparently, it was a massive breach of security. The whole court is being called in. My dad can't go, so Bill's going in his place."
Another thing that Harry found complicated about the Wizengamot was the number of seats. Ancient Houses held a certain amount of seats, and so a certain amount of votes.
Which, well. Why were these ancient rich families deciding the law?
Cornelius Fudge's face twisted in his picture. His mouth was closed in a thin line, his nostrils flaring with anger. He moved a wrinkly hand in front of the camera, hiding his face.
Harry wondered if Sirius was called to join the trial.
━━
"He was," confirmed Hermione the next day. She led the two boys to their first class of the day: Herbology.
Head high, she walked quickly, Ron and Harry stumbling to keep up with her.
"Adhara received a letter yesterday. Apparently, heirs are allowed to witness. He's pulling her out of school next Saturday."
Harry tripped, dropping his textbooks and glasses.
Ron and Hermione stopped in their tracks.
"Mate, you alright?"
