Chapter 9
━━━━━━━━ ✥ ━━━━━━━━

ADHARA SLID OPEN THE COMPARTMENT DOOR AND STOPPED. Harry looked over his sister's shoulder, only to see Neville Longbottom squeal when he noticed Adhara at the door.

"Hi, Neville."

"H — hallo, Harry."

Adhara didn't comment. She entered the compartment, put away her satchel on the shelf, then settled herself next to the window.

"How was your summer?" He sat next to Neville.

Millie followed in. She took the bench opposite the boys, next to Adhara. She sat with her legs up.

"G — good! Nan's stayed in her room most of the summer, so I could leave the house more often"

Harry glanced towards Adhara, who busied herself with the view outside the train.

Augusta Longbottom was one of the few families who voted against Matron's conviction. Though, Harry didn't think Neville knew that.

Adhara didn't look as though she wanted to comment on the matter. So, Harry didn't bring it up.

After a while, Millie left the compartment to buy something off the trolley, apparently not wanting to wait for the woman to reach them. She came back with a furrow between her brows.

"Guess who the Slytherin prefects are?"

That caught Adhara's attention.

Millicent settled in her previous spot.

"Who?" asked Harry. Even Neville looked interested .

"Malfoy and Parkinson. Saw them patrol."

Adhara all but groaned. "We wouldn't have to deal with Parkinson if you had kept the position," she reminded. Though, Harry didn't think she was actually miffed.

"Would have to deal with Malfoy on the daily if I had, though. Will gladly pass that on to Parkinson."

"I — I don't think she minds much," spoke up Neville. All attention turned to him, making the boy squirm in his spot. "Their parents settled their contract over the summer? Haven't you heard?"

Harry was confused. What contract?

Millie, on the other hand, looked delighted at the gossip. She threw all of her treats on the seat between her and Adhara, digging in.

"When did that happen?"

Harry snatched two chocolate frogs, handing one to Neville.

"Weren't he and Astoria betrothed?"

...what?

Neville nodded, corners of his mouth quirking up. "They broke it off this summer. My nan told me. Apparently, it was because of Lucius Malfoy's imprisonment. Malfoy's mother isn't happy, though. She doesn't like the Parkinsons."

Okay. What the fuck.

"What are you two talking about?" said Harry. "Betrothed? As in engaged?"

Adhara nodded. "Sacred Twenty-Eight thing. It's to ensure that their blood remains pure."

Well. It's no wonder they were all related.

"Not just Sacred Twenty Eight. Most pureblood families do it," explained Millie. "The Montagues approached my dad with a contract when I was a baby. Fortunately, he told them to fuck off."
