Chapter 31
━━━━━━━━ ✥ ━━━━━━━━

"POTTER, YOUR RACE IS RUN," DRAWLED LUCIUS MALFOY, PULLING OFF HIS MASK. "Now hand me the prophecy like a good boy..."

Anxiously, Harry's head twisted around to look at the Death Eaters that surrounded him. His hold on the prophecy only tightened in response. He wasn't stupid, he knew it was the only thing keeping his friends and him alive.

"Let — let the others go, and I'll give it to you!"

The Death Eaters laughed. Harry could see Malfoy's mouth curl into a grin. "You are not in a position to bargain, Potter," he said. "You see, there are ten of us and only one of you...or hasn't Dumbledore ever taught you how to count?"

"He's dot alone! He's still god be!"

Harry's head whipped around at the voice. Neville was rushing towards them quickly, bravely, even with a broken nose. Harry's could see the boy's hand shake in fear as he held up Hermione's wand to defend himself.

No. He shouldn't — he won't —

"Neville — no — go back to Ron—"

"STUBEFY! STUBEFY! STUBE—"

His broken nose made him mispronounce the spell, so it wasn't working, and, either way, his trembling hands made his aim wobbly. Some Death Eater sneaked up from behind the boy, capturing him. Neville wasn't one to give up, however.

"It's Longbottom, isn't it?" sneered Lucius Malfoy. "Well, your grandmother is used to losing family members to our cause...Your death will not come as a great shock..."

Harry watched Bellatrix Lestrange's face spark up at the mention of the name. Her eyes grew in size, making her look more manic. "Longbottom? Why, I have had the pleasure of meeting your parents, boy..."

"I DOE YOU HAB!" roared Neville, making Harry stumble forward. He briefly wondered if this was how Adhara felt whenever he mouthed someone off that could easily hurt him.

Neville struggled and kicked his captor so much that the man was starting to have trouble holding him still. "Someone stun him!"

"No, no, no." Lestrange's gaze flickered from Harry to Neville, as if she was telling him watch what I do. "No, let's see how long Longbottom lasts before he cracks like his parents. Unless Potter wants to give us the prophecy—"

"DON'D GIB ID DO DEM!" shouted Neville, at the top of lungs. Harry could see fear in his eyes and yet the boy was still telling him not to give in. "DON'D GIB ID DO DEM, HARRY!"

Harry almost toppled over trying to approach Neville, but Death Eaters blocked his way, and Malfoy had his wand pointing at him. Harry could only helplessly watch as Lestrange raised her wand at Neville.

The woman looked gleeful. She looked as though the very thought of torturing someone brought her joy.

"Crucio!"

Neville writhed in pain. His captor had released him, so the boy was on the floor, twisting and turning. Harry could see his face scrunched up as he screamed in agony.

Something in Harry's chest twisted, too. He didn't think, he held the prophecy above the ground with one hand.

"Stop! STOP! Or, I'll drop it!"

The Death Eaters halted once more. Lestrange stopped her curse, Malfoy took a step towards him, eyes widening at the sight.

Harry could sense someone approaching from behind him. He turned his head and noticed Rosier trying to make a grab for it.
