Chapter 18
━━━━━━━━ ✥ ━━━━━━━━

WHEN SIRIUS FIRST BROUGHT HARRY CLOTHES SHOPPING, HIS GODSON HAD BEEN ECSTATIC.

With Adhara, it was a different story.

She refused to stand still for the tailor. The poor woman complained through the whole ordeal of taking his niece's measurements for a new set of dress robes. Madam Malkin simply ended up using her school uniform sizes that she had saved in her books.

Now, roaming through the aisles at a muggle store, Sirius watched Adhara wrinkle her nose at all the bright colours.

"What's wrong with my hoodie?"

Sirius took a minute to take in the first words his niece had addressed him all day. He had bought the girl clothes before: a new set of uniforms last year, and bits and pieces this year. Knowing the girl, she would refuse anything else.

However, there was a Yuletide Party at the Rosiers, and Sirius had to attend to keep up appearances. Heirs were invited, so he decided to bring Adhara along this year. So, what better excuse to buy the girl some actual clothing?

But apparently, Adhara wasn't going to make this easy for him.

Sirius stared at his niece. Adhara regarded him with a serious expression: jaw relaxed, eyes uninterested. She didn't care about the hoodie, she was trying to make a point. She was testing him.

And Sirius wasn't daft. He recognized a challenge when he saw one. He was a marauder, after all. What was he supposed to do, back off?

Fuck no.

"It's a Yule Dinner Party. You can't wear that hoodie."

In all seriousness, Sirius didn't care what she wore at the party, as long as he got to buy her something (other than school uniforms, that is).

Last time there was a pureblood gathering Adhara showed up in her school uniform. Sirius couldn't say much since, first off, he had picked her up from school. Also, he felt just how light her trunk was. It didn't need a genius to know she didn't have much clothes.

Which is why Sirius wanted to swarm her in all the clothing he could buy her, in all the clothing he could have bought her had he not landed himself in Azkaban.

It should be a fairly easy task. Yet, apparently, it was not.

"Why not?" Adhara crossed her arms, giving the impression of a petulant child. "Is it because I'll make you look bad? Taint the reputation of the Ancient House of Black?"

Sirius' mouth almost fell open. He didn't expect the message to be sent across in this way.

"I don't care about 'family image'—"

"Brilliant. So, I'll wear my hoodie."

Sirius' mouth shut in a straight line. He crossed his own arms, but Adhara didn't budge.

"You're outgrowing it."

"Then get me another hoodie. But I'm not throwing this one away."

That. Well. That might work.

"Sure."

"Why can't I—" Adhara blinked. "What?"

"I said sure. Let's get you more hoodies. You want another grey one or another colour? And while we're at it, let's get you some new trousers. Those jeans look a bit short."

Adhara only scrunched her brows, looking as though she didn't believe what was happening.

"You're okay with me wearing a hoodie to a Yule dinner? Even though it's not proper attire?"
