Chapter 9 - Cube

2012 -

Tony and I have dated throughout the last three years, it's been really hard due to my work but we push through. Nat still judges our age gap, constantly makes jokes. She hasn't even met him yet.

I haven't seen Tony in over a month now due to many missions. Tonight Maria Hill, Nick, and I land down at a research base in New Mexico.

Nick leads us over to Phil, he had become a very close friend with me. More like a mentor. "How bad is it?" Nick asks.

"That's the problem, sir. We don't know." Coulson leads us inside. "Dr. Selvig read an energy surge from the Tesseract four hours ago."

"NASA didn't authorize Selvig to test phase." Nick says.

"He wasn't testing it, he wasn't even in the room. Spontaneous advancement."

"It just turned itself on?" I ask.

"What are the energy levels now?" Nick asks.

"Climbing. When Selvig couldn't shut it down, we ordered the evac."

"How long to get everyone out?" I ask.

"Campus should be clear in the next half hour."

"Do better." Nick says.

"Sir, evacuation may be futile." I say as we walk down the stairs.

"We should tell them to go back to sleep?"

"If we can't control the Tesseract's energy, there may not be a minimum safe distance." Maria says.

"I need you both to make sure that Phase 2 prototypes are shipped out."

"Nick, is that really a priority right now?" I ask angrily.

"Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on. Clear out the tech below. Every piece of Phase 2 on a truck and gone."

Maria and I exchange looks, "Yes, sir." We both say as we pass him.

We then pass two agents, "With us."

When we reach our destination, I step aside as my phone rings. "Hey, baby girl." Tony says.

"Hi honey, I can't really talk right now."

"Is everything okay?" He asks worriedly.

"Just a situation at work. Tony....I love you."

"I love you too, be careful." He sighs.

I put my phone away and turn back, as another truck loads out. Suddenly Clint walks past me. "Need these vehicles." He points, a couple agents and a weird looking man were following him.

"Clint who's that?" I ask.

"They didn't tell me." He doesn't look at me.

"Clint? What are you doing? Look at me."

He continues walking as Maria steps up to me. "Y/N, do you copy?" Nick yells through my radio. "Barton has turned!"

Suddenly Clint turns and starts to shoot at me. Maria and I both roll out of the way and take out our pistols. "I can't...I can't shoot him." I shake my head, standing as they drive off. Maria tries to shoot at the truck, she pulls me over to another truck.

"He's got the Tesseract! Track it down!"

I get in the passenger side of  the truck as she drives off. "I'm gonna try to shoot the tires!" I yell, standing up and aiming ahead I start shooting as other agents follow and try to shoot the man in the back. I stop as he uses his scepter and blasts a car out of the way.

"Hold on!" Maria yells as she drives past Clint and pulls the parking break, making Clint hit the front of our truck as she reverses. "Y/N! We need to stop him!" She yells.

I stand back up as Clint starts to shoot, "I'm so sorry Clint." I whisper, aiming and shooting at his windshield. I hear him yell out as I shoot his shoulder, not trying to kill him. He speeds past us and Maria drives after him as the ground above us starts to break.

Our truck stops as large rocks slam on our sides, blocking us in. "Shit." Maria sighs. 

"Director? Nick, do you copy?" I ask.

"The Tesseract is with the hostile force. I have men down. Hill?"

"A lot of men still under, don't know how many survivors." Maria says as we climb out of the truck.

"Sound the general call. I want every living soul not working rescue looking for that brief case."

"Roger that." I say.

"Coulson, get back to base. This is a level seven. As of right now, we are at war."

"What do we do?" Coulson asks.

"Y/N....I want you and Coulson to get to Stark. It's time."

"He won't do it..." I shake my head.

"He'll listen to you."
