"Kara Walker is an African American contemporary artist that utilizes the artwork style of silhouetted figures against a white backdrop to convey intertwined elements of racial tension and injustices in American history." Mrs. Evans explained as she pushed her thick rimmed glasses up the bridge of her narrow nose.
Honey leaned against her elbows, resting her chin in her hand as she attempted to pay attention to the professor of her creative art class. Just like in high school she had four classes. However, she only attended two classes each day from 11am to 1:45pm for four days out the week. Honey wasn't going to miss being at school 8 hours 5 days out the week. That's for sure. She always wondered why anyone would think that was okay. Attending elementary, middle and high school was basically a full time job.
"...I want everyone to mimic Kara Walker's style of artwork and create a painting of silhouetted figures that has context of any sort. If you want to tell a story or want to draw inspiration from a celebrity or public figure. That's fine. It's due week after next! Make sure to do the readings we'll be discussing them next class. If any of you have a question don't be afraid to email me. Class dismissed."
Honey jotted down the notes of another assignment she had to do over the weekend in her journal. Although, her university doesn't require her to be in classes too long. She had sneaking suspicion it had to do with the fact they knew that college students would need all the time they could get to finish these lengthy assignments. Out of all her work, only her art assignment was the easiest. She wouldn't even consider that work because she was starting to like painting. It was relaxing and fun. She wanted to explore it more which is why she signed up for this elective.
She quickly collected her possessions and went to meet with Angel, Royce and Cyn at the dining hall. She couldn't wait to see her friends after so long. It felt just like the good ole days when they ate lunch in the cafeteria and talked among themselves.
By the time, she reached the dining hall. She was out of breath from walking in circles because she had gotten lost again. When I see Cyn, I'm going to take a photo of her map cause I'm always getting lost in this maze of a school. She entered the bustling dining hall with bright smile. The dining hall could make her old cafeteria look like trash. The entire walls of the dining hall were made completely out of glass so it was like sitting outside without the insects flying and the sun beaming down on them. In addition, to being furnished with cushioned chairs, pristine tables and islands. She stood in line and picked up a plate of a cheeseburger with fries on the side. She scanned over the crowded tables, searching for the familiar faces of her friends.
Once, she spotted them, her legs led her over to where they were seated at table directly near the window that displayed the blue sky outside. "Hey y'all!" Honey chirped as she sat down in the only available seat near Angel. She was bombarded by various greetings from her friends.
