"Hold still, I'm almost done. Can you explain to me why you wanted box braids when homecoming is next week?" Honey asked curiously to her best friend who sat between her legs as she carefully parted her kinky hair into one last separate section.
Cyn adjusted her position on the pillows under her knees, her eyes glued to the television. She angled her head for Honey to have a better reach. "It's too damn hot outside for me to keep wearing wigs and my real hair. You know how this Georgia weather is. It won't start cooling down until the end of October."
Currently, Honey was in her dorm doing her best friend's hair before they had to leave for an away game in College Park. The weeks coming up were filled with games in the surrounding cities. The girls had been practicing rigorously for this game due to the particular school being Westwood university's rival. From what Honey heard, their school had at like 4 or 5 rivals so she wasn't sure why practice had been so intense for the girls. The only good that came out of it was how toned she was becoming. Honey felt more confident in her body than ever before. In turn, it boosted her self esteem and it showed more in the way she performed during their routines. Honey had finally accepted her slim frame with open arms because her body was beautiful the way it was. She hated how conditioned she had been all her life to believe there was to only one ideal body shape for women to have. When in reality, beauty really does comes in different forms.
Honey greased Cyn's scalp with hair oil and gently combed all the tangles out. "That's true. Who's to say you can't wear protective styles to a formal event like homecoming? As long as my hard work doesn't go to waste I'm fine." She tightly gripped the root of Cyn's strands and swiftly combined the brown braiding hair into her fingers, blending everything all together.
Cyn craned her neck around to make brief eye contact with Honey as she munched on some potato chips in the bowl on her lap, "Speaking of homecoming have you found a date yet?"
"I- thought you were going to be my date? Don't tell me you found someone to go with?" Honey cried dramatically as she finished braiding Cyn's hair. She sprayed hair foam over the top to further moisturize the box braids, examining her work as she did so.
Cyn grinned cheekily as she swallowed down the chips, "I wasn't trying to leave you high and dry on purpose. This fine ass nigga from my math class asked me to be his date. I couldn't turn him down. Don't forget you always have Royce as an option? You know he wouldn't dare take them hoes he's fucking to homecoming." She reminded Honey as she dusted off her hands and stood to her feet, stretching her stiff limbs with a yawn.
Honey started gathering the combs, hair oil and other items she used for Cyn's hair off of the table. "I know. I guess I'll call him so we can agree on the colors we're going to wear." She grumbled with pursed lips, placed everything back into the box where they stored their hair products.
Cyn strode over to their closet to change, tossing a neon pink tank top and leggings on her bed. "You wouldn't be in position had you put yourself out there! You're were too busy being heartbroken over Xena and DJ. I know you were interested in her. Mmhm, don't deny it either! Then BOOM, your ex DJ— the same one you're struggling to move on from by the way, swooped in and snatched her from under your nose. A double homicide." Cyn stuck her head out from the closet to give Honey a pointed look as she waggled her finger.
