Sophie tugged a red tee with lettuce edges over her head (another Biana hand-me-down), and threw on a grey zip-up jacket. She pulled on some jeggings, and then slid her feet into her trusty, classic Vans.  She rummaged through her dressers, and finally found a five dollar bill. Sliding it and her phone into her pocket, Sophie trotted down the stairs.

"Bye, Mom!", she called to Edaline, who was doing some form of intense Pilates in the living room (Not again). Edaline wiped some sweat off her brow. She smiled and panted,

"Bye, hon, have-" she paused while doing a deep squat pose, and then rose, "-fun at the football game!"

"I will, Mom." Sophie closed the door behind her as she started her walk to the stop sign where she had arranged to meet Dex. She glanced at the trees in the yards of their neighborhood, noticing that for the first time, tints of gold, orange and red adorned the edges of the still mostly green leaves. Fall was breathing down summer's neck, but summer was still clinging on.

Looking ahead past the trees, Sophie saw Dex.

          "Hey, Sophie!" Dex grinned.

"Hi!" Sophie replied with a matching expression. "You ready for this game?"

Dex lifted one side of his joggers up, revealing the FHS (Foxfire High School)crest on his socks. "Got the socks to prove it," he said, shaking a foot. Sophie laughed, and the two continued their walk to the school, teasing each other and chatting as they went. This was going to be fun.

                                            ****************************************************

Sophie quickly screwed the pieces of her flute together, ready to play in the pep band. Dex was off with his trumpet friends, messing around, and getting set up. Hopefully Linh would get here soon so they could sit together while they played. That was the advantage of having another flutist as a friend, because in pep band they had to sit with the same instrument types. As she leaned over to buckle up her case, she heard two people call her name, and turned around. It was Marella and Biana! Both girls looked adorable.  Marella wore her orange and white cheer uniform, and had her her hair pulled back into a curled high ponytail. Biana wore her hair down and wavy, and was rocking the dance team's tight, knit, long sleeved top and black leggings. Both of them wore white tennis shoes, and each held a pair of orange and white pom poms.

"Hey guys!" Sophie greeted them, smiling. "You look so good! I'm excited to see you guys preform!"

"Thanks!" Biana beamed. Marella grinned, saying,

"Yeah, well, we're cheering to the pep band's music, so you better not mess up." She poked Sophie's arm playfully.

          "I'll try." Sophie said, laughing.

"Well, we better go Sophie, but we just wanted to come say hi. The game starts in ten minutes, but we want to go find our  teams to practice with them beforehand," Biana informed Sophie.

"Sounds good!" Sophie replied, as the two girls trotted back down the bleachers and onto the grass, splitting up to join their teams. Sophie scanned the field, looking for Keefe and Fitz. They had to be coming out soon .  .  .

An elbow leaned against Sophie's shoulder, and a, "Hey Foster," followed. Sophie screamed and dropped her flute, nearly sending it falling down the crack in the bleachers. Luckily, Keefe, lightning fast as ever, caught it before it became a one-too-many-holed flute. He grinned and handed it back to her.
