-Kaydan's P.O.V-
I had made it to work a lot earlier since Christian dropped me off. He even had an extra 30 minutes before his first period started.
I fix my hair in the mirror ignore Luke to the best of my abilities. I close my locker and head for the door.
"Who's your friend?" He asks purposely getting in my way.
I sigh and dart past him.
"He's kinda old for you. Does Christian know about him?"
I turn on my heel and glare at him. "It's Christian's father."
His mouth slowly drops open. "You're kidding...right?"
I shake my head as I reach the door. Luke follows close behind me and looks in his direction once it's open.
Mr. Zureich was observing the inside
of Wayne's and not paying much attention to his surroundings. He carried a small notebook to jot down notes and ideas, no doubt for his writing.
He notices us staring and waves at me, then jogs over. "A friend of yours?" He asks, indicating Luke.
"Indeed," Luke steps in front of me. "I'm Lucas Matthews at your service! I'm in charge of this establishment."
"I'm not surprised Kaydan has acquaintances in high places. Very impressive, non the less," Mr. Zureich says shaking Luke's hand.
"Is there anything I can get for you?" Luke continues.
"Water would be great," he responds with a grin.
"Excellent. Take a seat, and we'll be with you momentarily," Luke disappears behind the door leaving me with Mr. Zureich.
"So..." I begin awkwardly. "Is there anything you want me to do specifically?"
He shakes his head. "Just be yourself. I want to witness 'The Kaydan Green' that was able to make my son fall for him!" He finishes with overly animated hand gestures.
I slowly nod. "Right..." He is definitely an author.
He walks to the far end of the restaurant and sits where he can still see me.
This is going to be a long day.
Luke returns shortly and hands him the water, before returning to my side. "...Are you sure that's Christian's father?"
"That's what he told me."
"Yeah, sure...but he didn't just hire some dude on the street?"
"I hope not." Before Luke returns to his post I grab his arm. "Christian is coming to get me around 3."
"You're off my clock at 2," he states.
"Can't you just give me the extra hour? I don't want to stay here and do nothing!"
"...Only if you take your baggage with you when Christian comes."
"He wouldn't let me leave without him, even if I wanted to," I mumble taking a peek at him.
"Kaydan!" I hear him call for me as he frantically waves his arm.
"Looks like you're being summoned," Luke grins. "Take your time."
I roll my eyes at him and walk over to Christian's father. "Yes sir?"
"Don't be so formal!" He laughs.
"It's my job to be," I grin awkwardly.
"Hmm," he jots something down in his spiral as he chuckles before he looks back up at
me. "Do you have a second to spare?"
"Uh..." I peek around the building.
Serves me right for getting here early...
"I guess so," I sit opposite of him, keeping my eyes peeled for any sign of life to enter through the doors.
"How old are you?" He doesn't waste anytime.
My attention is completely captured by him. "Who, me?" I question already blowing it.
"Who else?" He laughs.
"I'm 22," I answer, trying not to make it seem like a big deal.
His eyes go wide for a second. "Really? Doesn't Christian seem a bit young for you?"
I shrug. "He's too mature for his age," I say under my breath.
I guess I gave the right answer because he bursts out into a laughing fit. "Right you are!"
I glance over my shoulder and see Luke and David both looking at me. They quickly turn away and pretend to be having a conversation of their own. Luke laughs out loud himself, not failing to look over at me and wink.
I exhale deeply and try to smile at Mr. Zureich.
Once he regains his composure he says, "I don't understand how someone like you is able to put up with him."
"I like a challenge," I answer honestly.
"You've definitely got one with Christian."
"Wait...so..." I try to find my wording. "You're okay with Christian and I-"
He holds up his hand. "I don't see a problem with it for now. I've been trying to get him to go back to school for quite some time. I don't know how you managed it!"
I smile so wide my cheeks hurt. "It wasn't easy." I actually loosen up a bit and become more comfortable. Mr. Zureich isn't as mean as I thought he'd be.
"I bet!"
The minutes pass by with us making jokes about Christian's harsh demeanor, and how our relationship has been going. I am also told some new information about Christian that I can't wait to test in the future. Once things start kicking off, the usual brunch rush comes in and I have to leave to help. "I'll be right back Kenneth," I call to Christian's father as I take off.
I get people seated and take orders as quickly as possible, but still never manage to put time aside to get back to him. I check on him every now and then and see that he has his laptop out and is probably working on a book of his.
I need to ask him about that later.
After a few hours go by, I check the time and see that it is almost 2.
Time usually never goes this fast!
I head to the kitchen and see Lucas is down for his break in the back.
"Where's Jasper?" I ask sitting beside him.
He sets down his water and clears his throat. "He's probably at the front with Sarah. Kaleb is suppose to be bringing him lunch."
"Huh."
"How are things with Christian Senior?"
"Ew. Please don't call him that," I try not to vomit. "Not bad. He's kinda cool."
He stares at me in shock. "Christian's father?"
I nod. "He's surprisingly okay with everything that's happened, and is looking forward to seeing how Christian is going to turn out because of me."
"...Are you familiar with the term 'pressu-'"
"Are you joking?" I cut him off. "I've been suffocating on pressure the whole time! If I told him that he would think I lack confidence!"
"...But you d-"
"Not the point!"
He laughs at me the second Kaleb and Jasper enter the room.
"Hey guys," Jasper says allowing Kaleb to walk ahead of him.
I eye him suspiciously. Kaleb is wearing a black suit with a red tie, and avoids my gaze like the plague.
"Heyo!" Luke replies.
"Any word from mom?" I ask Kaleb.
"Not mom," he answers quietly sitting across from me.
"Speaking of which," Luke starts, "I have an idea."
"I do too, actually," Jasper adds.
"Uh, Christian told me he was going to do something," I finish looking at them.
"That's cool and all, but I think my plan is pretty well thought out," Luke brags leaning back in his chair. "You guys should just watch how it's done."
"Well...What is it?" Jasper questions nervously.
"You want me to tell you and let you steal my idea for yourself?"
"No, I was just curious! I wanted to see if we could work together to-"
"Fat. Chance," Luke breathes.
"Th-Then I won't tell you mine either!" Jasper retaliates.
"Never planned on asking."
I look between them baffled. "Guys!"
"Did Christian tell you his?" Kaleb asks me, distracting me for a second.
I shake my head. "He said he would later."
"Ha! This is perfect!" Luke exclaims. "May the best man, or in this case plan, win!"
"Guys, I really think we should talk about this," I argue.
"I'm going to impress the jorts off of your parents. There's nothing more to talk about," Luke ends standing up and walking to the door.
As he leaves I rub my palms into my eyes.
God damn it!
"Um," Kaleb begins bringing my attention to him. "I tried mentioning this before...Mom never sad anything, but Jonathan told me they were on their way this morning."
I look over to Jasper, and he immediately dodges my eyes "...What? This morning? I thought we had a couple of days?"
Kaleb shrugs. "Apparently they should be here tonight."
Which explains the suit and tie.
"Kaleb...define 'here'," I breathe.
"...I texted them your address," he smiles loosely.
