-Lucas' P.O.V-
We are all gathered in Kaydan's living room...minus Kaydan. The smell of chicken and creamed corn fills the room. I offer a dry cough to invite sound back into the room.
"Who was that?" Kyle finally asks looking at Kaleb.
Kaleb steps closer to him with Jasper's arms still wrapped around his waist. "Christian's daddy," he answers shuddering.
Kyle's eyes go wide. "THAT was Christian's father?" He repeats baffled, ignoring how Kaleb phrased it.
He nods.
Kyle looks at me. "Luke, that was-"
"I know who that was. I met him this morning," I rub my neck.
His whole body faces me. "Why didn't you tell me he was here?"
"You were way too focused on your parents, and I didn't want to stress you out more than you already were!" I argue.
"Good call," Kaleb agreed.
Kyle raises his hand to protest but couldn't find anything.
"How about, 'thank you'?" I try, placing a kiss on his cheek.
"H-Hey, Y-You stop!" he fights as I pull his back into me and wrap him in a hug.
"Yeah, sure! Whatever you say!" I wait for him to complain about our suits getting wrinkled, but he doesn't say anything. He only places his hands over mine. I smile at my tiny victory.
As Kyle calms down I glance at everyone else. Jasper is wearing one of his better uniforms, and Kaleb is wearing a black suit along with a purple tie. Christian had a nice blue flannel, and black jeans to complement it. He looks as if he's ready to go to a semi-formal gathering.
"Is everyone here?" I hear Kaydan's voice call as he emerges from his room. He is smirking at all of us. He had chosen to wear a blue flannel as well, but instead of wearing black pants, he opted for the gray, sweat kind. His grin grows wider when he sees Christian's reaction. "You didn't burn my chicken, did you?"
"What are you doing?" Christian partially whispers.
"Hmm?" He questions walking over to the oven. He pops it open and grabs the two bear mitts to his right to remove the lightly, crisped chicken. He places the chicken on the counter protectors, and turns to face Christian.
Christian looks him over. "Why are you wearing that?"
"Because it's comfortable," he answered simply. "Plus, this way you aren't under dressed and we match! Although I'm kind of upset that the shade of blue is different. It's not by much, but I can still tell! Grated, this is the shirt you gave me for my birthday- and I love it- but it's just not the same," he rants the last bit.
"How are you suppose to impress
your parents in that?" Christian continues baffled.
"I'm glad you brought that up!" Kaydan takes Christian's hands into his. "Trying to impress
your dad all day made me realize something. For starters, it nerve-wrackingly stressful! But, as time progressed I stopped trying to impress him and just went with the flow, which turned out to be so much easier! Also, you shouldn't have to try to impress your own parents. You don't even try to do that," when he finishes he turns to look at all of us. "Then again, I'm not in the entertainment industry and they are already disappointed in me, so I really don't have much to lose. You guys might, so keep up the good work! Besides, I've already impressed one parent today, I'm spent! Where is Kenneth, by the way?"
For some reason Kaydan's speech didn't make me feel any better.
Shit...am I trying too hard?
I glance over at Kaleb and Jasper to see them stare awkwardly at Kaydan before noticing that Kyle is shaking slightly himself. I tighten my arms around his waist and rest my chin in the crook of his neck.
"...He left to get Christian a suit," Jasper answers finally.
Kaydan looks at Christian. "Are you kidding me?" He almost laughs.
Christian shrugs. "I told him not to," he grumbles.
"As long as he doesn't take too long. My parents should be here any minute."
Christian sighs and takes Kaydan's hand into one of his. "I need to talk to you."
"Okay, what-"
"Not here," Christian takes a peek at the rest of us.
"Oh come on!" Kaleb exclaims, "who would we tell?"
Christian narrows his eyes at him.
"Fine, fine," his eyes go back to Kaydan as he speaks, "but make it quick!" Kaydan says in defeat.
Christian slides through the rest of us and dodges the counter as he makes his way to the door.
Once it closes I stare at the door for a little longer, envying how easy it was for him to escape the tense situation. After Kaydan had left, the atmosphere seemed to calm down, even if it wasn't by much. Kyle taps my arm and I release him. He turns to face me and his face is locked in a frown.
I glance over at Jasper and Kaleb. They had found their own corner of the room to talk something out. I return my attention to Kyle. "What?"
"Are you positive you don't want to go home? I can tell my parents that I got sick, and that we have to reschedule, o-or that we got into a car crash, and you were rushed to the ER, o-or-"
I gently place my hands on his cheeks.
He instantly stops talking and bites his lip.
"We will be fine," I whisper.
He brings his hands up to mine. "I want to believe you."
I rest my forehead on his and close my eyes. I take a deep breath and enjoy the feeling of
having him this close to me. "I won't let them take you away from me."
"Lucas-"
"I promise." I lean in to place a kiss on his lips, but a knock at the door interrupts our moment. "I'll go let him in." I release him and head for the door. "No one locked the door!" I turn the knob and fling it open. "You could've just-" I stop short.
And older woman as looking up at me, and next to her is an older gentleman.
"U-Uh-" I begin.
"Move," a familiar voice calls around the corner. Jonathan makes his appearance and pushes past me and into Kaydan's apartment, while the older figures follow him.
"Hello mother," Kyle says uncomfortably.
...I should've been able to put that together...
"Kyle!" She exclaims rushing up to him. "Nice suit choice!" She wraps him in a hug and kisses his cheek several times. "Where's-"
"Hi mom," Kaleb squeaks as I close the door.
"There's my little one!" She goes for him next before handing out more kisses. "You look so handsome!"
"Mom, stop!" Kaleb groans trying to push her away as kindly a possible.
She lets up before turning back to me. "Who are you?"
I look at Kyle, then back to her.
This is my chance!
"I'm a good friend of Kaydan's," I answer walking up to her. "Some would even say we are brothers."
Kyle steps over to me and yanks at my arm. I'm sensing that he wants me to stop talking, but I had to execute this now.
"If it's alright with you, Ms. Green, I'd like to call you...mom."
