They all made it back to camp and X took roll call again just to be sure.
"Scar?"
There was no response and X suddenly got worried.
"SCAR!? Scar are you here?"
A head peeked out from a tent.
"Yes, I'm here, sorry!" Scar waved and apologized.
"Jeez you almost gave me a heart attack." Xisuma mumbled. Scar gave him another quick apology and ducked back into his tent, zipping it up quickly. X didn't question it and moved on to the next name.
"Grian?"
A 'thud' was heard behind him and a red sweatered person lay face first in the ground, with a few worried expressions glancing in the direction.
X turned around and sighed. There was a muffled noise that sounded like an "I'm here" from Grian, who now had his thumb up to show he was fine. Xisuma rubbed the bridge of his nose before checking off his name.
The sounds of Xisuma checking off the rest of the hermits faded out as he walked around, while Cub made his way to his tent.
Scar unzipped it just a little to make sure it wasn't another hermit and then took a moment to open it fully while Cub patiently waited.
Inside, Scar was sitting crisscrossed with a familiar cat in his lap.
"I'm surprised she stayed put the whole walk." Cub muttered loud enough for Scar to hear.
"Hey!" Scar whisper-yelled. "She is a very good kitty; She wouldn't run off." He looked downwards at her and made a sweet kissy voice, "You wouldn't run away from me would you Jewwy? No you wouldn't!"
Cub rolled his eyes and pulled his bag closer to him.
"After X does roll we're eating dinner and s'mores, you might want to get something a little warmer for outside and set up Jellie's bed."
"Thanks for telling me." Scar raised Jellie's paw and waved it for her "Jellie thanks you too!"
Cub chuckled and left the tent, silently hoping Jellie wouldn't try to sleep on his face during the night.
"When's dinner? I'm starving, man!" Ren whined, walking around the campsite aimlessly.
"Well maybe if you would actually help set it up it could go quicker!" Beef shot back, trying to read the instructions on the can for the hundredth time.
"How about you grab some kindling for the fire, Ren." Xisuma offered. The campfire had plenty of wood to keep it running for the night at least, but didn't have the small sticks and dry leaves to start it up more easily.
Ren sighed and walked to the trees and bushes near the edges of the campsite.
His ears picked up some muffled snickering and he paused his search to see who it was. Iskall and iJevin were laughing quietly behind a tree, covering their mouths with their hands to try to keep silent.
Ren raised an eyebrow and was about to go question them, when-
"Hey Ren, whatcha up to?" Doc popped up from behind, leaned his arm casually on Ren's shoulder, and snapped him out of his daze. Ren shook his head and looked Doc in the eyes. Well, one eye and one robotic eye.
"O-oh uh- just getting kindling for the fire."
"Need help?"
"I could sure your strong muscles too help me carry stuff~" Ren taunted. Doc huffed with a confident smile, shrugging as a sure.
After a few quick minutes, they had some awkward-to-hold armfulls of leaves and sticks and dropped them onto the campfire circle.
"Oh oh can I light it?!" Grian asked excitedly, running up to the open area.
"No no, that's not a good idea!" Mumbo jumped in.
"He's right, Grian might light the forest on fire." Cleo came up from behind them, a bright pink blanket wrapped around her shoulders. "Also when's dinner? It's getting cold and late."
"As soon as I heat up the bean soup!" Beef said. "Etho, do the honors with the fire." He said, handing the lighter to him.
"Aww..." Grian sulked.
"Yes!" Etho smiled, snatching the lighter quickly before they could change their minds.
It took a few tries because the wind is a b**** , but it finally lit and started up pretty quickly.
"Good kindling.." Etho muttered, loud enough for Doc and Ren to hear. They smiled proudly and fist-bumped.
"DINNER EVERYONE!" Joe rang a triangle he had exactly brought for the occasion.
Hermits flooded around the flaming flame of the flaming warm fire-campfire that was on fire that etho lit with the lighter that started the fire that was hot. Fire.
There was a variety of blankets and warm jackets littered throughout them to keep warm while stars sparkled into view above them. The soup actually tasted pretty good and they passed warm cider and coca around from thermoses to stay warm.
