A/N- The caption to this post on Tumblr read, 'What if Wei Ying died again?' and it had another picture with Lan Zhan standing alone that said, "Wei Ying, I feel as if you are still beside me. I miss you. So much." And i swear i didn't sign up to cry today but I almost sobbed.
<also the image has nothing to do with the chapter i just thought it was sad and i liked it>
EVER SINCE HIS sister's death, Wei Ying had become terrified that all the people he loved would die. Whenever someone got a little injured, he would panic, and rush them to a doctor, 'just in case.' It had been cute at first, but now it was just annoying.
You were high-up in the Lan clan, the sister of Lan Zhan and Lan Xichen, and Wei Ying absolutely adored you. Whenever he saw you, he would smile, and he would always buy expensive and colorful hanfu for you, even if it was the last of his money. You reciprocated his feelings, and loved him very much as well. He was your beautiful brother-in-law, and you would protect him with your life.
One day, after a night hunt, you returned home with a gash on your side. It didn't hurt that much since it wasn't that deep, it was just an annoyance. You went to Wen Qing's room as soon as you returned to Cloud Recesses and had her apply disinfectants and bandages to the wound, then you continued about your day as if nothing was wrong, occasionally wincing from a small burst of pain the wound would give you when you sat down.
That night, the Lan clan had a dinner to celebrate a very successful night hunt. Since you were the one that had killed the most spirits, you would sit in the place of honor at the head of the table, which was where Grandmaster Lan Quiren usually sat. You didn't think about it until you were at the table, but Wei Ying would also be attending the banquet.
When you saw his smiling face, you were instantly aware of the wound on your side. It seemed to pulsate with more pain just by you thinking about it, and you winced and bit your tongue so as not to cry out, knowing that if you cried out, Wei Ying would know that something was wrong and would be afraid.
When your older brother Lan Xichen passed by, you tugged on his hanfu and showed him the wound, explaining how you got it and how you wanted him to cover for you if you cried out suddenly or visibly winced, so that Wei Ying wouldn't be anxious. Kind and loyal Xichen gave you a nod and a pat on the hand.
"Does it hurt much, sister?" Lan Zhan whispered to you from across the table, where he was sitting next to Wei Ying.
You pressed a finger to your lips and pointed to Wei Ying, then shook your head and said, "No, it's not hurting."
Lan Zhan understood what your gesture meant, and he gave you a nod and a thumbs up, then looked back down at his food.
After a series of quick announcements about the great success of the night hunt- and, more specifically, your great success in hunting spirits- the dinner commenced. You felt good for most of it, but when you stood up to stretch and to make sure the wound didn't get too moist, a flash of pain went up your side and down your hipbone. You tried to bite the yelp away, but it came out too fast, and everyone at the table looked at you.
"I'm sorry," you said, feeling terribly embarrassed. "I got a wound from the night hunt and it hurts when I get up quickly. It's not that serious-"
"A wound! You're injured?" Wei Ying cried out, covering his mouth with his hand in an expression of shock.
"Don't worry, Wuxian, it doesn't hurt-"
You were silenced by Wei Ying throwing his arms around you and sobbing, "Don't leave me! Don't leave me!"
The stoic Lan clan were brought to laughter at this sight, and protective husband Lan Zhan was enraged.
"Silence, you fools!" he snapped. But, of course, nobody listened to him.
Lan Xichen sighed in exasperation and hissed, "Be quiet. Is this how we treat other people in the Lan clan? Absolutely not!"
Wei Ying was holding onto you tightly, squeezing your injured side and putting you through a great deal of pain.
"You're squeezing my injured side, Wuxian," you told him. "It... AH!"
He had just squeezed you harder at hearing the word 'injured' again. Pain flashed up your entire body, and you fell to the ground.
Wuxian was immediately on his knees next to you, crying out your name and screaming, "Don't leave me! Please!"
Lan Zhan rushed to his husband's side and pulled him away from you. When the pressure of Wei Ying's grasp was released from you, you could breathe again, and got up not shortly after.
"See, she's not hurt!" Lan Zhan said. "You were holding on to her too tightly, so she was in a lot of pain. She's not going to die though, she's just in pain."
"Y-you're not going to die?" Wei Ying stammered, taking your hands in his.
"No, I'm not. This is just a small wound. Don't worry about it," you said.
"I-I'm just so scared... I-I don't want to lose you... lose you l-like Shije... m-my s-sh-shije..." he sobbed.
"I won't leave you this easily," you said, gently stroking Wei Ying's back. "I promise you that."
"Sh-shije..." Wei Ying whimpered, holding on to you tightly. "Be my shije..."
"No need to ask," you said. "I'm already your shije in my heart and yours."
"I- I l-love you shije... d-don't leave me," Wei Ying sobbed.
"I'll never leave you, Wei Ying," you said. "I never will leave you. I promise that."
"Y-you promise?" Wei Ying stammered.
"Yes, Wuxian. I promise."
Wuxian was satisfied at this, and let you go.
But he watched you closely the whole rest of the banquet.
