A/N- I write way too many Wen Ning one shots but he's one of my comfort characters and I love him so much. I cherish this precious cinnamon roll. If I could meet the actor, I would say, '我爱你, 你是一个很好演员!" (I love you, you're an amazing actor!) But my Mandarin is terrible and I'll never meet any actors or singers I like so...
Also happy 90 chapters! What a milestone! I'm glad you guys enjoy these one shots! I'll definitely keep them coming.
YOU AND WEN QING were just trying to sit, relax, and have a drink together calmly. You were old friends, and you had just recently gotten back together for a few drinks while you were in Nightless City for trading. But, sadly, that was not to be.
Before you could even take a sip of your long-awaited alcoholic beverage, a red dressed servant ran up to your table and fell on her knees in front of Wen Qing, gasping for breath and apologizing profusely before even telling why she had run up to the doctor while she was having an outing with her friend and interrupting said outing.
"Tell Wen Ruohan he can wait for acupuncture," Wen Qing said coldly, clearly not in the mood to interact with that ugly, rude, disgusting man any more than she had to.
"Lady Wen, it's your brother Wen Qionglin!"
When Wen Qing heard that, her usually emotionless dark eyes filled with alarm, and she got up so fast she nearly knocked over her drink. You stared sadly at your cup, twisting it around on the table a couple of times before choosing to get up and follow Wen Qing and the servant up the mountain to where your friend and her brother resided.
As you ran up the mountain, trying your best to keep up with a quickly moving and panicked Wen Qing, you racked your brains to remember what you knew of Wen Ning. You had obviously seen him when you went on outings with his sister sometimes, but you didn't remember much about him. He was quiet and introverted, and didn't talk to you much. But you did remember that Wen Qing told you he liked you. He had a crush on you when both of you were younger, but as you aged, he began to just think of you as a second jiějie.
"Has Wen Ning-" you gasped before continuing, your chest in pain from so much running- "been doing well lately? Is this sort of announcement and anxiety over his condition normal?"
Between gasps and pants, both Wen Qing and the servant negated that statement. Then Qing added something that broke your heart.
"Ning has been being bullied a lot more lately. Sometimes he comes home crying, shaking, and covered in blood. But I have a feeling this is more serious than that. Servants never get this worked up over injuries they know I can heal."
After seemingly endless time spent running , you finally reached the palace of Wen Ruohan, where Wen Ning and Wen Qing resided. The servant rushed ahead to report to whoever had ordered her to reach Qing that her order had been followed, and you and Qing rushed to her room to check on Ning. As more memories of him flooded back, you remembered him as a sweet, helpful child who just happened to be weak and shy. He suffered from a bad stuttering when he spoke, so he didn't speak much. You didn't know if any of that had changed, but from how Wen Qing described it, nothing did.
When you reached Wen Ning's room, you heard him muttering under his breath inside, and heard him pacing. His footsteps traveled forward and backward, forward and backward, over and over again. He sounded like an insane man, but that just made you feel worse for him. You looked at Wen Qing with sad, sympathetic eyes before opening the door to see what was going on.
As soon as Wen Ning saw his sister, he cried out and threw himself at her, holding on tightly to her body and crying into her shoulders. She held onto him, comforting him with sweet words, and you stood there looking on helplessly, unaware of how to comfort him.
When he saw you, he wailed and buried his head in his sister's chest. She wrapped her arms around him and whispered, "I'm sorry," knowing that you would feel hurt and confused if a young man who grew up loving you like another sister was now terrified just to see you.
"Don' hurt me," Wen Ning pleaded, slowly making eye contact with you, his words muffled by the bulk of Qing's chest. "'M sowwy..."
"Ning dìdi... why do you think I want to hurt you? We've been friends for so long. You used to love me like a sister. Where has that love gone?"
You were heartbroken at this new development. Qing could tell you were hurt, and that hurt her loving heart even more. She tried to reach out and touch your shoulder, but you just moved away, refusing her touch and comfort. You wanted to suffer. You deserved it for hurting such a sweet hearted young man. How could you have possibly messed up so badly as to hurt Wen Ning, the gentlest, sweetest of all the clan disciples you knew? How cruel of a person were you?
You turned to go and then heard Wen Ning softly whimper your name.
"A-Y-Y/N..."
You looked back at him to see that he had untangled himself from his sister's arms. Although he was still shaking and looking a little anxious, he reached his arms out to you and smiled a small smile.
"Ning... do you recognize me again?"
Your eyes filled with tears when he went over to you and embraced you. Leaning against your shoulder, he hummed and said, "I love you..."
"You're so precious to me, Ning dìdi. I love you. Don't let others hurt you, okay? Remember we're here. I'm here..."
Qing joined you in hugging Ning, and the two of you held him in your arms for what felt like a very pleasing forever.
You would always protect Wen Ning. Now and forever.
A/N- Not me wishing I could hold Wen Ning close to me the way the characters in this story do. I love Wen Ning so much. My precious comfort character ❤️❤️❤️❤️ endless hearts for you.
