WHEN XICHEN SAW his brother's throat bleeding again, it was as if all the blood faded from him as well. He screamed and threw himself onto Lan Zhan's bed, putting pressure on the wound and trying to make it stop bleeding.

"Y/N!" he cried out to you, who was standing awkwardly by the side of the bed not knowing ehat to do. "Go get a doctor! Wangji needs a doctor!"

As soon as you heard your brother's order, you took off running down the halls of Cloud Recesses. Never before had you thought the halls of your home were long and labyrinthine until you were running, tears pouring down your cheeks, screaming, "Doctor! I need a doctor! We need a doctor! Help, please!"

You slammed into a well-built chest and your speed instantly slowed to zero. You backed away and hastily apologized, not wanting to annoy the man you crashed into.

"It's alright," the man said in a surprisingly soft voice. "I'm a doctor. Do you need some help?"

"My brother, Lan Wangji... his throat, it's..."

You couldn't even finish the sentence, but the doctor didn't care. All he needed to know was that Lan Wangji, Second Young Master's throat was injured, and that judging by your mood, it was a serious injury.

"Lead me to him," the doctor said, and you could almost sob in gratitude. You raced down the halls with him following closely behind you.

When you reached Lan Zhan's room, you fell to the ground as if you had just run a marathon. Xichen knelt down next to you to make sure you were okay, and the doctor opened his medical bag and began to treat your younger brother, who was unconscious at this point.

"Whoever stopped the blood flow, you may have saved his life," the doctor said as he examined the torn skin and ripped out stitches. "Without you applying the pressure and making the blood clot, I don't think that the blood would have clotted naturally. Something's wrong with his body, and I believe it's centralized in his golden core."

"His core?" you cried out, afraid for your brother's life.

Xichen wrapped his arms around you and held onto you for dear lie. You could feel him trembling.

"Wangji..." he whispered.

"I know, gege," you said. "I feel the same way. We need to stay strong. Stay strong for our di di, okay?"

Xichen nodded, but he kept his head buried in your chest. You gently stroked his hair, feeling more than a little awkward at the fact that you were showing such blatant affection in front of someone you didn't know. The doctor didn't seem to mind, though. He was too busy trying to take care of Lan Zhan to focus on what the two of you were doing.

"Ah. That explains it," he said.

"What is it?" you asked, jumping up to your feet. Xichen followed suit, never once letting go of your hand.

"His golden core is filled to the brim with resentful energy. The resentful energy is slowly destroying his body and mind. This isn't a bodily issue after all, it's a spiritual one."

"How is it possible that his core can be engulfed in resent like this?" Xichen asked. "He didn't face any resentful energy lately at all! He's been in the safety of Cloud Recesses ever since Wei Wuxian's death!"

"The resent could have been dormant for a long while and only been activated now," the doctor said. "In fact, I believe that that is the case. This resentment can be easily swept away, though. If both of you play Cleansing for him, it should be destroyed."

"Both of us? The amount of spiritual energy both of us exert when playing our instruments is quite a lot. Could we not use less?" you asked.

"A great amount of energy is required for this," the doctor responded. "Without both of you playing together, the resentment will not disappear, and your brother's body and soul will completely be consumed by it. So yes, the two of you playing together is necessary."

"Alright. Y/N, are you ready?" Xichen asked, pulling Liebing out from the folds of his hanfu.

You pulled your flute out and placed it to your lips.

"Let's start," you said.

Together, you played the melody of cleansing. As you played, you noticed the resentment flowing out of your brother in thick black waves. The sheer amount of it made the air around you tingle and feel toxic. Your hands began to shake on your flute, but you kept your mind clear.

The spiritual energy you and Xichen released from playing Cleansing clashed with the resentment, and it made your mind clear. You managed to finish the song without much difficulty, then both you and Xichen collapsed to the ground, faint from the amount of spiritual energy you had to exert.

The last thing the two of you saw before you lost consciousness were the two eyes of Lan Zhan opening.

"Wangji..." you and Xichen whispered in unison, before succumbing to your loss of consciousness.
