AS LAN ZHAN sat with Wei Ying, he felt as if he was in paradise. Baby bunnies raced around all around them, and they each held one in their laps. Wei Ying had a smile on his face, and that made Lan Zhan happy. As long as the man he loved was happy, he was happy.
He laid his head on Wei Ying's shoulder and said, "I love you, Wei Ying. Thank you for being by my side."
Wei Ying smiled and ran his fingers through Lan Zhan's hair, soothing any remnants of anxiety that the young master of the Lan clan had.
"I love you too," Wei Ying said as he stroked his husband's hair. "I love you so much."
"Now, isn't this better than being with Y/N?" Lan Zhan joked. "Am I not more soothing than they?"
At hearing your name, Wei Ying felt sad again. He sighed and pulled himself out of Lan Zhan's embrace, making him concerned.
"Why must you make me compare you and your sibling? I love both of you," he said.
"You're mine, Wei Ying. Mine. Not theirs."
"They never said anything against you! They even said that they shouldn't block me from loving you, that they will never do anything to separate us. They're a nice person, Lan Zhan, and if your jealousy wouldn't cloud your vision, you would see that too."
Lan Zhan scoffed and muttered, "I prefer Xichen gege. At least he doesn't try to steal you from me."
Wei Ying was angry now. He jumped up to his feet, dropping the baby bunny onto the ground and making it squeal in pain. Rudely, unusually, he didn't even care about the bunny's pain. All he cared about was the fact that his husband- kind, loving, respectful Lan Zhan- was insulting his sibling simply because he was jealous of them. And he wouldn't accept that.
"Y/N is a kind person! They aren't trying to steal me from you, they're trying to heal my trauma! They've never spoken a single bad word about you, and they've always told me how much they love you. They even said they would give their life for you! So you need to stop being jealous of your sibling, and realize that they love you!"
After he yelled at Lan Zhan, Wei Ying felt exhausted and tired. He fell down onto the ground, then got up and walked away from Lan Zhan so that he wouldn't fall against his husband's shoulder when he fell asleep. He laid himself up against a log and fell asleep shortly after, leaving Lan Zhan awake and contemplating how terrible of a brother he had been.
Y/N... I'm so sorry... I know how sensitive you are. My jealousy and my cruelty towards you must have hurt so much... I'm sorry, my precious one...
A Lan clan disciple came running down from the mountains, interrupting Lan Zhan's thoughts. He was panting, and looked terrified.
"Second Young Master!" he yelled, crying out Lan Zhan's title.
Lan Zhan opened his eyes and looked at the disciple. Judging by his expression and his tone of voice, he knew that something terrible had happened.
"What is it?" Lan Zhan asked, shaking the disciple's shoulders. "Tell me, what has happened?"
Hearing his husband yelling, which is something he never does, Wei Ying snapped his eyes open just in time to hear the bad news and see Lan Zhan's reaction.
"Your sibling, Third Young Master Y/N, killed themselves with their sword. They left a note that says it's to you and Wei Wuxian. Here it is."
Lan Zhan screamed and began to choke up blood. Wei Ying rushed to his husband's side and pushed him to the ground so that he could be more relaxed. He took the note from the disciple and thanked him for running all the way there, then told the disciple that he could go. With a low bow, the disciple thanked Wei Ying and raced off again into the forest.
"Lan Zhan," Wei Ying whispered, holding onto his husband's shoulders tightly. "You need to stop choking up blood, or you'll pass out."
"Y/N... my sunshine..." Lan Zhan choked. "I-I'm sorry... I was s-such a t-terrible brother... I-"
"Hush, Lan Zhan! Y/N loved you! Until their last breath, they loved you. It says so in their suicide note. Let me read it to you."
Wei Ying unfolded the note and read it out loud to his husband.
To my dear Lan Zhan and precious Wei Ying,
I'm so sorry I had to leave you like this. I know you're probably struggling to cope with my death right now, and I just wanted to say a few things to comfort you.
First, my beautiful Wei Ying. You're deserving of all the love you recieve and more. You deserve the world, and you've been given the bare minimum. It hurt me to see, and until my last moments, it still does hurt me to see you suffering. Please, don't be too hurt by my loss. You have other people, other friends, other people that love you and are willing to help you. My brother is one of them. I'm so sorry I had to leave you. It'll be easier in the future for you to be with the man you love without my meddling, though. I just did this to make everyone happy...
"You never meddled," Lan Zhan whispered, tears running down his cheeks. "I was such a fool, Y/N. I ruined your life, made you kill yourself, for no reason but my foolishness. Forgive me..."
And now to my brother, Lan Zhan. And to my eldest brother Lan Xichen, who will inevitably read this as well, even though I don't want you to.
You were the greatest siblings I could ever ask for. I loved both of you so much, you were precious to me, you were my everything. Xichen, you taught me how to fight, and Lan Zhan, you taught me how to play instruments. I remember falling asleep to you two performing duets on the flute and guqin... what a pleasant memory that is!
"I remember that... you looked so beautiful lying there, Y/N. Like a wild water sprite come to earth..."
Lan Zhan, my best friend. Please know that, even though you're jealous of me and hate me sometimes, I never did hate you. You are my older brother, my inspiration, my everything. I lived to make you happy, and in death, I will watch over you and make certain that stoic face of yours is graced by a smile once in a while!
And to my oldest brother, Lan Xichen, my loyal protector. I love you so much, Xichen gege. You try so hard to protect the clan and take care of everyone, that I'm afraid you don't take enough care of yourself. Please, rest up a little, and be sure that your health is alright. I don't want the noble leader of our clan to die so early into his career! Your Y/N always worries over you...
I'm so sorry you had to see me like this. Hopefully you didn't, and a servant brought this note to you. If you did see me this way, please, don't think less of me for it, and I hope it didn't scar you too much. After all, there's a lot of blood, and a lot of pain, but not much gore... just blood all over the floor.
I love you so much, words cannot even express it.
Goodbye,
Lan Y/N.
After reading the letter, both Wei Ying and Lan Zhan's eyes were filled with tears.
"I'm so sorry, Y/N," Wei Ying sobbed.
"I'm so sorry, my sunshine," Lan Zhan choked out.
Your loss hit them hard, and it helped Lan Zhan learn a very important lesson.
Jealousy can be fatal.
