Ally's POV-
"I'll sleep on the floor and you can have the bed." I offer.
It's the Friday night that signals the beginning of break and Savvy is spending the night at my house.
"Deal." She flops down on my mattress.
I frown. "Wait, you can't just do that. I have to offer the bed, and you say no, I can take the bed, and I insist that you take the bed. THEN you take it."
She stares at me. "Well, if I end up with the bed anyway, what's the point?"
"Because..." I struggle for words. "Because it's against the rules."
"What rules?"
"The rules of... sleeping over politeness!"
"Okay, whatever. But I'm still taking the bed."
An hour and a half later, it's one. We are sitting on the floor, watching Bates Motel on my laptop. There is a knock on the door, and we both jump. My mom peeks her head in. "Light's out, girls. It's one o'clock in the morning."
"Mom!" I complain. "We're fifteen, not five. And we're definitely not sleeping right now."
She narrows her eyes at me. "Watch your tone, young lady. Also, I said light's out, not go to sleep. Last time I checked, you could still watch TV without any lights."
I don't say anything as she leaves the room.
"Wow, your parents are really uptight." Savvy comments.
"Yeah." I grimace. "They can get really frustrating."
"At least you still have parents."
I don't meet her eyes. It's hard to come up with a response to that.
Before things become more awkward, she hits play on my laptop.
A little while later, I reach out and close it. "There's no way I'm watching this in the dark."
"What... Scared?" Savvy teases.
I simply nod.
After a pause, she says, "I am."
I reach over into the popcorn bowl. "Well now what do you wanna do?"
"Not many options without light."
"True."
"So how did your date with Robbie go?" I ask.
"Really well, actually."
"Good." I realize that I sound a little wistful.
"You know, you never did tell me the full story of why you hated him."
I pause. "Well, I told you about the camp thing, right?"
"How you went to summer camp together a bunch of years?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah, you said that."
"Okay, well, I had liked him for a long time, like three straight years."
"Three years? And you never told him?"
"Don't interrupt. And yeah, I never told him. I think he knew, though. So a couple of years ago, I took my best friend to camp with me. I completely trusted her, and I told her everything about this boy who had left me starstruck for three years standing. I get to camp, and the first few days were great. Robbie never really talked to me directly, but I was cool with that. Besides, we had our squad, and I was as close to him as I could get, because I knew he didn't like me back. One day, though, I was walking back to my cabin with my best friend, and she told me that she was starting to like him. I was shocked, and I subtly tried to discourage her from talking to him. It didn't work. The second to last day at camp, she told me he kissed her on the cheek. I got mad, but didn't say anything. She also said that he told her he wanted to kiss her on the lips. I couldn't believe it, but I kept my thoughts to myself. The last day, during breakfast, I noticed they were both missing. I knew something was going on. Because it was the last day, we were scheduled to leave right after breakfast. Pretty soon, everybody was loaded on the buses and none of the counselors knew where they were. After five minutes of waiting on the stuffy bus, she and Robbie came running out of the woods. They said they had gone on a hike and gotten lost. I knew better. On the way home, she told me everything. In the morning, before anyone was awake, she had snuck into the boy's cabin and woken up Robbie. They went and hid until everybody was at breakfast, then they snuck into the empty cabins and locked the doors. She then proceeded to tell me about how she gave him a blowjob, and they almost did the deed. They were naked and everything, but then they realized the time. They got dressed, ran into the woods, and came out by the buses to seem like they had gotten lost. I never saw her again, and that was the last year I went to camp, two years ago. I was thirteen."
Savvy's quiet and I ask, "Did you fall asleep?"
"No, just processing everything."
"That's why I don't trust him."
"Wow. I never realized it was that severe. They both knew you liked him, and they did it anyway? Well, meant to do it."
"Yeah." I say quietly. There's silence.
"If you don't mind, I'm going to go to sleep."
"Same." And I drift off into sleep.*********************
