Savvy's POV:
FIVE! We all chant. It's the last minute of the school year. Everybody is on top of their desks, chanting out the seconds. FOUR! THREE! TWO! ONE!!! The bell rings, and the school explodes into chaos. Screams fill the building. I jump off my desk as Melissa runs up to me. We throw our arms around each other and spin in a giddy circle. Then she grabs my hand and we run out into the hallway, getting swept away by the torrent of kids rushing out into the sunshine.
As we burst outside, she screams out of pure joy. I crack up.
We wait for all our friends, then we go to In-n-Out for lunch.
Afterwards, as I'm laying on my bed at Cynthia's, I feel strangely hollow. I have a lot of friends I'm going to miss in England, but one especially. At the thought of Ally, my throat tightens. She never even responded to my text I sent last week about Michele.
I don't even get to say bye to the one person that I really cared about. By the time Texas filming is over, I'll be settled down in London already.
I roll onto my side and squeeze my eyes shut. A tear leaks out. No, I think, stop crying. I blink rapidly, drying my eyes. I get up off my bed and go downstairs. I walk into the kitchen. Cynthia's at the stove, stirring something in a pot. "Hey." She says.
"Hey. What're you cooking?" I say, sitting down on a stool.
"Mac 'n cheese. Want some?"
"Sure."
She scoops some into two bowls, then walks over and places one in front of me. She sets hers down and leans on the counter with her elbows. "Talk." She commands.
I shoot her a confused look. "What?"
The corners of her mouth crinkle upward. "Don't try to pretend everything's fine and dandy. I've lived with you long enough to know when something's bothering you. So spill."
I sigh. "Um... I just miss Ally. She hasn't even bothered to text me back, and now I'm leaving to England in five weeks and, let's be honest, I probably won't see her again."
I see a gleam in her eye that disappears quickly, but I didn't miss it. "What?" I demand.
"Nothing, nothing." She turns away from me and busies herself with some dishes in the sink.
I know she's hiding something, but I'm exhausted, and the next few days are going to be super busy. So I walk upstairs and fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.**************
