Savvy's POV:
*ding dong* I hear the doorbell, which means only one thing: Robbie is here. We are going on a date tonight, but he wouldn't tell me what we're doing. So now I'm up in my room having a hard time deciding what to wear. I finally settle for a black crop top with the Beatles on it, frayed denim shorts with studs, and black Vans high tops. I comb my hair, put a nose stud in, grab my purse, and run downstairs.
Cynthia is waiting with Robbie by the door. "Ready?" He asks.
"Yep."
Cynthia says, "Curfew is eleven. You have seven hours, because it's four right now. Plenty of time."
"I'll have her back before then."
I hug her and we leave.
"Was she bothering you?" I ask.
"Not really, she was just wondering how we would get to- ...Wait, I almost told you where we're going!"
My eyes sparkle. "I can be very persuasive."
He picks me up and throws me over his shoulder, then runs to his car. I squeal.
He tosses me in the passenger seat of his BMW. I playfully punch him. "Look at my hair!"
"Your hair? What about my hair?"
I reach over and mess it up. "There. Now we're even." I say smugly.
"Fine." He puts the keys in the ignition. "Wait, I almost forgot!" He reaches into the backseat, and grabs a blindfold.
I shake my head. "Uh-uh. No way."
Before I can stop him, he has it across my eyes. "Don't take it off or else I'll leave you in a dumpster somewhere."
I giggle.
Fifteen minutes later, the engine dies. He takes off my blindfold. I stare at the restaurant. "Chick-fil-a..?"
"No, we're just here for food. I have a different place in mind."
We get our food, and then I'm back in the car with the blindfold.
We drive for what seems like a very long time. The road starts to get curvey. "Where are we?"
He doesn't respond. Around ten minutes later, he pulls to a stop. "Here."
I pull off the blindfold and gasp. We are in a clearing, like something you would see in a movie. Tall pine trees are around us, but the clearing has grass and wildflowers. The car is parked on a strip of gravel that extends from the way we came. "This... this is gorgeous, but it's not what I was expecting. Why here?"
"Well, this is were I live."
I give him an incredulous look. "What? This is a forest. How do you live here?"
"Sorry, I shoulda explained better. My family owns this area. Our house is a mile or so down the road. We own fifteen square miles, and the road we were on is named after my last name: Carter."
I spin in a slow circle. "That's so cool. I never really thought about what your house was like, but it was bound to be incredible because you're so rich. I always forget I'm surrounded by some of the richest people in the world."
He laughs. "Well, flaunting money isn't as fun as you think it would be. Anyways, I wanna show you something, the best part about my property."
He grabs my hand and pulls me toward a tree. When we reach it, I see the boards nailed into it forming a ladder. He starts climbing, and I follow. At the top, I go through a trap door to enter a platform with rails.
Robbie points. "Look."
I do, and my breath hitches in my throat. The ocean spreads out before me. I turn to him. "I though we were in the mountains! How is the beach right there."
He laughs and wraps an arm around my waist. "That's what makes the area so valuable. It's mountain terrain all the way up to the beach. A true California phenomenon."
I'm in awe.
We go back down the tree, and go to get the food from his car. I grab the drinks and bag. He goes to the trunk and pulls out a blanket, an ice chest, a camera bag, flowers, a grocery bag, a backpack, and towels. "How did all that fit in your tiny trunk?!"
"It's not actually that much stuff, Sav."
"Whatever."
We grab the rest of the stuff, and he leads me to a little trail I didn't notice before.
We walk for a little while. "It's really peaceful here." I comment.
"Yeah," he sounds thoughtful. "I come here a lot when my parents fight."
I don't say anything, just grab his hand and intwine our fingers.
When we reach the beach, he lays down the blanket, and puts the bags, ice chest, towels, and backpack down. Then he hands me the flowers. I smile at him then pull him into a hug.
We sit and eat, just chatting about random things. At one point he opens the ice chest and pulls out chocolate ice cream, and we eat it out of the carton.
After we eat, he hands me the backpack. "Your swimsuit is in there."
I go into the woods to change, and when I come back out, he's changed too.
I run past him, tossing the backpack with my clothes onto the blanket, and I dive into the water. We swim for a little, and the sun has almost set by the time we're done.
It's seven twenty one, and after drying off and changing, we sit on the blanket to watch the sunset.
"It's gorgeous," I whisper.
He pulls me into his lap and whispers into my ear. "So are you."
I turn my head to look at him. Before I can talk myself out of it, I twist around in his arms so we're facing each other. I wrap my arms around his neck, and lean forward slightly. He moves in, and the next thing I know, our lips touch. My eyes close. He tastes like salt and ice cream. I hear a click all of a sudden. I pull away and notice he has the Canon camera in his extended hand. "Did you just take a picture of us?"
"Yeah. Because of the sunset."
I look at the camera screen and gasp. "This is amazing."
It shows a silhouette of two people kissing with the sunset in the background. With the silhouette, the people are unrecognizable.
He smiles at me. "I wouldn't have just taken a random picture like that. I'm no pervert."
"Are you sure about that?" I tease him, before leaning back into his chest. Life couldn't get better than this. I think. The best boyfriend in the world, Bookfest next month, a bestfriend who means so much to me. I even have Cynthia, best boarding house mom ever.
Looking back, I realize that I was right. I should've known nothing this perfect could ever last in my life. It didn't get better at all. Nope. Just as things were perfect, just when I thought nature was giving recompense for everything that had happened to me, that's when everything fell apart.****************
