Chapter 24

"Tell me she's alive. I need her alive." Derek whispered as he sat back down and tears polled in his eyes. "She's alive Derek. She's in the ICU, intubated but she's alive. We fixed her Bypass. It should work now." Teddy said to him. "She's alive?" Derek asked once again not sure if he heard it right. "She's alive Derek." Teddy assured him, Derek sighed in relief and hugged Teddy. "Thank you." Derek whispered, Teddy smiled and rubbed his back shortly. "C'mon I will bring you to your room." Teddy said as they pulled away. 

Alex, Cristina, Derek and Teddy went to Merediths' room. Derek gasped at the sight of his wife. Once again intubated and she looked so fragile and small in the big bed. Derek sat down beside Meredith and took her hand into his. "Oh Meredith, why is our life like that? The universe is so screwed up." Derek whispered as a single tear ran down his cheek. "I love you." Derek then whispered, he stood up and kissed Merediths' forehead. "I need to take a walk." Derek whispered with a broken voice while looking at Alex and Cristina. Derek left the room and went outside. He sat down on a bench and closed his eyes, tears began to flow down his cheeks. Soon he began to cry. 

Meanwhile in Merediths' room

Alex sat down besides Meredith and stroked her hand gently. "Why are you leaving?" Alex asked Cristina. "It's not the same here anymore." Cristina replied. "I can't be here anymore." She added. "Of course it's not the same anymore but you can't leave Meredith and me. You just can't." Alex said angrily. "Alex, I don’t feel home anymore. I can't stay here." Cristina answered. Alex just nodded and stood up. "Page me and Derek when she wakes up." Alex says before leaving Cristina alone.

Meanwhile

"Derek?" a voice asked, Derek looked up and saw Maggie Pierce standing in front of him. "Go away." Derek whispered. "Why are you here?" She then asked. "Because my wife just had surgery in her heart once again." Derek snapped. "Shouldn't you be sitting with her then?" Maggie asked. "Her best friends are with her." Derek said harshly. "Why are you even here?" He asked. "I'm a doctor here." Maggie replied. "Is it because Cristina is leaving? Is that why they hired you?" Derek asked angrily. "If you mean Dr.Yang then yes I'm here because she's leaving." "Oh that's great. Now I can't even get a break at work." Derek mumbled. "What do you mean?" Maggie asked. "My name is Dr.Derek Shepherd. I'm a neurosurgeon, at the moment I'm still head of neurosurgery. My wife was going to be a General Surgeon." Derek snapped and left Maggie alone. 

Derek went to Owens Office. "Chief?" Derek asked. "Derek, what can I do for you?" He asked. "I want to step down. I can't be the head of neurosurgery anymore. Give it to Amelia." Derek said. "Derek why?" Owen asked. "I have to take care of Meredith. I don’t want to be away all the time." Derek explained and Owen nodded. "I'm going to set up a department Meeting with all of you. I also have to introduce someone new." Owen said. "You mean Maggie Pierce?" Owen nodded and looked at him confused. "She was there on Zola's birthday. She's Meredith's half sister. She's the reason Meredith passed out on Zolas' Birthday because she pressured her." Derek explained and then left the room.

The Meeting

After everyone was in the conference room, Owen stood up and cleared his throat. "You are all wondering why we are here." Owen said and everyone nodded. Owen looked at Derek and he nodded. "I'm no longer the head of neurosurgery. I'm more than grateful to call Dr.Amelia Shepherd the new head of neurosurgery." Derek announced. "What?" Amelia asked. "You are the new head of neurosurgery." Derek said proudly. "Really?" She asked and Derek nodded. Amelia stood up and went over to her brother. "Thank you." She whispered as she hugged him. "Of course." Derek said as they pulled away. "Sorry." Amelia said quickly before sitting down once again. "I'm sorry I had to check on a patient." Maggie said as she entered the room. Amelia looked at Derek with wide eyes and Derek nodded. Just as they wanted to continue Derek and Teddy got paged. Meredith 9-1-1 Derek read quietly, he then looked up at Teddy who looked at him as well. Without saying anything Derek sprinted out of the room. "What's going on?'' Alex and Amelia asked. Teddy just gave Owen a stern look which he understood. 'This had to do something with Meredith' he thought and nodded towards Teddy who left the room as well. "Hunt, what's going on?" Amelia asked. "Nothing that should worry you." Owen replied and hoped that he was right.
