"John?" I ask, concerned slightly about him and where Paul is.
"I believe that's my name." John says, smiling and walking towards George and I. I feel my heart beat faster, curious to know what he wants.
George steps in front me slightly, something I see him do often. "Why are you-"
"Paul wanted the day to write music alone." John says, his eyes looking at mine briefly. For a second, John smiles. "I really just need some time away from Cynthia before the party. She's acting crazy again."
George nods and puts his hands into his pocket. "Is everything alright between you two?"
John laughs, finding his question somewhat amusing. "When have we ever been alright?"
I look away from the two of them slightly, feeling awkward. Is this the kind of thing that happens to married couples eventually? It seems like almost everyone I know has grown to dislike their partner after a while.
"You should really think about what's more important, John. I'm sure Julian can do without your tantrums." George speaks sincerely and John looks at him, his lips forming into a smile.
"I know...I love both of them, you know? It's just hard with the band and all." John looks at me and then to George. "I guess it's something the two of you don't understand just yet."
George and I look at each other quickly, suddenly aware that he didn't mean us having a family together. I feel my cheeks heat up and swallow nervously.
"I have to ask - why are you here with George?" John eyes me and I look at my gloves bashfully. Damn.
"We wanted to get out for a bit." I say, looking up and smiling slightly. I feel very awkward and decide to hide behind George slightly.
John looks up at the sky and sighs. "No offence, love, but Paul isn't too fond of you spending time with George. He's expressed this to me some time ago."
I look at George, unsure how to respond.
"We know, John. We're strictly friends and that's all. It's up to Paul to decide how he feels about that." George says, moving over slightly so some pedestrians can walk by.
"I'm sure he wouldn't be too happy hearing you are out with Carol right now and not at an interview. Paul told me that's where you two were before he asked to be left alone." John smirks slightly, something surfacing in his mind. "I don't think he would want me to tell him but I am awfully bored..."
"Don't!" I say, suddenly aware that John is threatening us. I don't want hide with George but Paul did ask me to cool it with him.
John looks at me surprised and smiles softly. "Don't worry, I wouldn't do a thing like that. I just don't like having two of my best mates fighting over some girl I barely know."
I bite my lip, aware that I did just join their little family a month ago.
George clears his throat. "We aren't fighting John. Carol and Paul are together and we are just friends." George emphasizes the we by pointing at the two of us.
"It's really none of my business but keep it that way please. The last thing we need right now is tension within the group." John says rather coldly, looking at me. I can't tell if he likes me or not.
"I wouldn't worry about it." George says, looking at me and smiling. I've always wondered why he's been so kind to me despite all the trouble I've put him through.
"I'll see you two later. I'm actually out to buy Cynthia a gift." John smiles and walks away, fixing his hat to hide his face from the public. I wonder what he's going to get her - I hope it's something good. I bet she'll show me later tonight anyways.
George looks at me slightly and laughs. "Why the harsh face? You know I wouldn't let John do anything to you, right?"
I widen my eyes a bit as George straightens his stance slightly. I smile and look into his eyes, scanning them quickly. I wonder why I can't read him as well as he can read me.
"I'm sure Paul would be more concerned about it than you." I say, more hopeful than matter of fact because I don't have a clue what Paul really feels right now. I hope he's doing alright - he did say he wanted to be alone and all.
"If that's what you believe, you must be right." George smiles and begins to walk softly in the snow. I walk beside him, an air of silence between us as I look around the city streets.
