It had been like this for longer than anyone could remember.
Nowadays, society was divided into three major biological sub-genders: Alphas, Betas and Omegas. It was a genetic lottery that one could only pray to win, since it would pretty much determine someone's destiny, almost a priori.
Betas account for the majority of the World's population at around 80%. Despite that, Alphas were, in fact, the ones that ruled everything. They were born with a silver spoon in their mouths, treated and educated as such throughout their entire lives. Even if they made up a much smaller percentage of the total population, they were more than enough to hoard most of the World's leadership positions and other high-ranking statuses. Since their educations were compeered to their high birth, they usually developed a dominant personality wherever they are inserted into. In many cases (perhaps, way too many), with that power and wealth, would soon come violence.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, there were Omegas. A minority, fairly less than even Alphas, Omegas practically lived in the shadows of society. It was considered one of the worst fates one can have, especially for male Omegas. They were rare and usually exploited, since there was the belief that they were capable to give birth to the most powerful and natural Alpha leaders. Even if sometimes euphemized by the media, the general public was aware of the non-stopping cases of abuse, kidnapping and trafficking of Omegas.
Some of them would try to run away, others would be luckier and be surrounded by the right people through their entire lives, while others would just hide it away forever and try to live a normal life...
Park Jimin was an Omega.
Jimin had always been smaller than other children his age, so his parents had always put that hypothesis on the table. When Jimin was only twelve years old, his parents had the talk with him. They explained how unfair and twisted the World was, the high possibility of him presenting himself as an Omega and how it would affect his entire life.
With that being said, twelve-year-old Jimin retained two essential things in his mind that day: Alphas were not trustworthy, therefore he must avoid them at all costs, and if he presented himself as an Omega, he must hide it for the sake of his own life.
When the day he presented came, when he was a small fourteen-year-old pup, Jimin had already made up his mind.
He had chosen to live as a Beta.
He couldn't change his biology at will, so his parents called for the help of modern medicine. Jimin had been taking suppressants ever since his first and only heat, the effect lasting long enough so that he had lost any trace of an Omega's scent. When he moved from Busan to Seoul to go to university, to the noses of other people, he was undoubtedly just another Beta.
After finishing his course, he worked twice as hard as anyone else and managed to establish a small telecommunication business that quickly grew bigger and became well-known. His company was now on the rise and it had promising perspectives for the future.
In the same future, he also pictured a life with some Beta partner that he hoped to find along the way and with whom he could feel confident enough to be his true self without worrying.
That was how he made it throughout his entire life and he felt proud to see how he has been managing to succeed against all odds.
This day in particular was different, even though it was supposed to be like any other day.
It had been tough at the company lately, with a lot of meetings and deadlines coming in, so Jimin has been one of the first people arriving at the office, and one of the last people leaving; the "turning off the lights and locking the door behind him" kind of last. In that regard, it had been just another of these days.
