"I know you didn't do it." The voice sounded.
"...Huh?" I murmured. Startled, I turned around to find the source of these words.
"Soyeon?" I said in disbelief. That made absolutely no sense. How was she, of all people, so sure that I didn't do it?
"If there's one person who should think it was me, it's you! You heard everything she said to me that night. What makes you so sure that I— that I didn't murder Shuhua?" I asked, jumbling my words together as I went.
"Because I found the murder weapon." The words slid smoothly from between her lips like venom, almost. My jaw dropped to the floor.
"You WHAT?!" I shouted. Soyeon quickly moved her hand and positioned it over my mouth, muffling my words.
"Shut up. Be more discreet. Everyone already thinks it's you, don't attract more attention." She said sharply. I knew Soyeon could be harsh, but right then, she was cold as ice. I only knew her through Shuhua, so it made sense that I hadn't seen many sides of her, but it was still shocking. I only ever saw her like this when putting one of those annoying guys in their place. I slowly nodded, and pulled her hand away from my mouth hesitantly.
"But how— what do you mean you found the murder weapon?" I asked in a daze.
"I mean I found the murder weapon. I can't discuss anything else here. Too risky. We don't know who's listening." She began, staring me dead in the eyes with a gaze that could shatter glass.
"Listen, let's work together. I know you wanna know who did it. So do I." She uttered boldly, extending her hand out for me to shake.
"Let's find out together." She spoke, her expression piercing my soul. My eyes widened, as I looked up at her, then back at her hand.
"Like...an alliance..?" I asked shakily, still taking in her offer.
"Precisely." She replied promptly. I paused, creating a temporary awkward silence in the room. She continued to hold her hand there, extended in front of me, waiting for me to take it.
"I just... it just happened. So much has happened recently. I don't know if I can handle... I'm not ready..." I stopped. Soyeon replied quickly, almost cutting me off.
"If you sit here waiting until you're 'ready' you never will be." She said.
"What?" I muttered, furrowing my brows slightly.
"You will never be ready to face the reality in front of you if you keep holding yourself back. The world won't sit and wait for you to be ready. That's how it is. Shuhua wouldn't have died if that wasn't the case. You either suck it up and find closure yourself or you sit and wait for it to come to you. And you're better than that." She explained, her hand remaining there, where it had been the whole time. "So, are you in or not?" She asked again, her eyebrow cocked upwards as she looked at me with that same blank, yet cold expression.
I sighed, slowly bringing my hand to meet hers. I gripped her hand firmly and gave it a sturdy shake, solidifying the agreement.
"Alright." I said a little more confidently, with a brisk nod.
"Can you come by my dorm tonight? I can explain everything when we're alone." She continued, prompting another nod from me.
"Yeah, I can do that. Don't you have a roommate though? Is it ok to talk about it with them around?" I asked.
"Not anymore. She transferred to a different university and moved out as of about a month ago." She explained. Oddly convenient. I nodded my head in understanding, furrowing my brows slightly.
