"Is that really enough evidence to say she did it?" I questioned, head dazed from all the information.
"What's going on?" Miyeon asked frantically, shooting her eyes around the room aimlessly.
"You're under arrest, that's what's going on." Yuqi replied sternly, standing up from her seat.
"Wh— Again?" Miyeon gocked. "Wait, wait, no, please! There has to be some kind of mistake!"
"The only 'mistake' here is the one you made when you sent Shuhua a death threat two days before her body was found. Rookie mistake, at that. Laughable, really." Yuqi chuckled, as Officer Sihyuk took the hint and stood up, reaching for his handcuffs on his belt.
"... Miyeon killed Shuhua?" I uttered in shock, watching as the situation escalated.
"No!" Miyeon shouted, tears beginning to prod at the corners of her eyes. "I never killed anybody! I swear, please, you have to believe me!"
"Another case in the books for Ms. Song Yuqi." Yuqi boasted as Sihyuk approached Miyeon, forcibly grabbing her wrists and cuffing them.
"Miyeon, I..." Soyeon sighed, frowning as Miyeon struggled in Sihyuk's grip. "I really did start to believe you."
"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law." Sihyuk recited to hush Miyeon up. "You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed for you."
"Jesus fucking Christ, please!" Miyeon begged to no avail. My stomach churned. I felt sick. It didn't feel right, but maybe, for once, I realized Yuqi was right. The truth was hard to swallow.
"Please, give me a chance!" Miyeon begged.
"You've had a chance since the second we met, Miyeon." Yuqi shrugged. "Everything we've done led us up to this moment. No worries, though. You'll have lots of time to prepare for your trial in county jail. With that money of yours, you should have more than enough cash to get a good lawyer, no?"
I watched in disbelief as Miyeon was dragged away, pleading and screaming as she was taken. Nobody really said anything after that. Yuqi looked completely satisfied, and Soyeon and I couldn't seem to find any words. The melancholy air rendered me unable to utter a word.
"God, that's gotta be the best feeling in the world." Yuqi exhaled, sitting down and stretching her arms over her head. "Let's have drinks tonight to celebrate. My treat."
As Yuqi talked, I found myself unable to feel as proud and satisfied as she did. I just couldn't figure out why. This was what I had been working towards for over a year, was it not? Everything we did, all the effort we made, it all led up to this. We finally solved the case. It was over. So why wasn't I happy? Could it be that I realized... this wasn't the closure I wanted? Was it anticlimactic? Perhaps I just needed time and everything would process later. Maybe the idea of finding out who killed my ex no longer "entertained" me like it used to. I guess that with my self growth, I no longer craved the answers. I used to lose sleep thinking about Shuhua and needing to know who killed her. Maybe because Shuhua used to be all I ever knew. I needed to fill the void somehow, but I no longer had a void to fill. I healed for the most part, moved on, and Soyeon was more than I could ever ask for in the girlfriend department. The answers I sought for so long... maybe they just became meaningless.
"What... is there to celebrate?" I mumbled.
"Huh? What is there to celebrate? We just solved the case we've been working on for over a year. What's got you so up tight? "
"Sorry, I guess I just..." I began, trailing off slowly. "I don't know. Sorry."
"We became rather acquainted with her. Don't blame her for needing time." Soyeon explained. "Besides, we still need to wait for the trial for this to all wrap up. Innocent until proven guilty, right? Like you said?"
