Over the Edge

Sky's POV

I stood beside Four on a rock ledge that definitely looked man-made. But was crumbling under my boots.

I felt sick as I looked at the ruin of this Hyrule. Everywhere I looked I saw ruins. The destroyed temple of time, Hyrule Castle, the town below us, and the building overlooking the lake some ways away.

I felt sick as I thought of how I could have stopped this. I could've killed Demise properly and then he wouldn't have cursed me and Sun and the other reincarnations of the hero's spirit and Princesses of Hyrule.

Yet. This Hyrule was beautiful. Over the years after the calamitous event which destroyed this world, nature had taken it back. Ruins where covered in vines and moss. Forest ranged for miles.

Nature ruled this Hyrule with an iron fist. It was not prepared to let go.

It was a tragic beauty. I could only begin to imagine what was lost for this feral beauty to reign unchallenged.

I clenched my sailcloth in my hand-it had become a nervous habit of mine. I studied the ground at my feet, refusing to look at what was left of this Hyrule. The poor Link. What he and Zelda and their friends must've gone through for this to happen.

Luckily before I went too far down that path, Wind spoke.

"What happened here? What timeline is it in? And what is that thing coming toward us?"

I looked where Wind was to find one of those spider-like machines coming our way. I pulled Fi from her sheath and shifted into a battle stance.

The metal monster had a rotating head, glowed hot pink, and had a hypnotic blue eye. It moved with determination, like it had been given a mission that it had failed, but was not going to give up yet.

The other Links had their swords out as well and were studying the mechanical abomination.

When it saw us, a red targeting laser beamed from its eye and onto my chest.

The ominous beeping steadily grew louder and closer together as the seconds wore on. Out of the corner of my eyes I could see the others watching me with fearful fascination.

The robot had stopped where it was.

A million thoughts ran through my mind at the speed of light. I could hear my heartbeat like my heart had been moved to directly beside my ears.

Thump, thump.

There was no way we could out run that thing.

Thump, thump.

We easily outnumbered it though.

Thump, thump.

But it was made completely of metal. There was a low possibility that our swords could penetrate it.

Thump, thump.

Finally, all thoughts cleared from my mind, except for one. I glanced at the edge. We would have to risk it.

Time seemed to slow down as a bright blue light flashed from the creature's eye. Replacing the red beam.

I couldn't hear myself over my own heartbeat, but I knew what I had said.

"Jump."

I didn't wait to see the other's reactions. I was already jumping off the edge, an explosion throwing heat onto any exposed area of skin.

Fi was safely back in her sheath but I could hear her concern in my head. As if she were right in front of me, criticizing my choice to jump.

I couldn't help myself. I smiled as I free-fell. It reminded me of my own journey, my life before I met my reincarnations.

How I would jump off the edge of Skyloft and fall for just a moment, relishing the wind whipping through my hair before bringing my fingers up to my mouth and whistling for my Loftwing, who would catch me safely on his back, helping me traverse the skies.

But there was no Loftwing to save me now. I could only hope that the others were behind me, as the ground flew up to meet me.
