As I took one last look around my room, I went downstairs to my mother and Carla, they were talking at the kitchen table until they noticed me.

,,Hey, you look great!" said Carla.

,,Thanks, you too" I said smiling.

Carla was wearing a crop top and jeans, and her hair was silky and straight as always.
She really looked remarkable.

,,Do you have everything? We'll go straight to the university dorm after the ceremony and say goodbye to you there" my mother said.

I nodded, although I still had the strange feeling that I had forgotten something.
Mom was wearing a long dress with high heels and her brown hair was twisted in, and her eye makeup accentuated her brown eyes.
I don't even know who I got my green eyes from, because both mother and father had brown eyes, but I got the brown straight hair from my mother.

,,Yes, mother, I have packed everything, my suitcases are in the car" before I could say the sentence, Carla interrupted me.

,,And if she has forgotten something, I can go to her in the dormitory and bring it to her" said Carla and winked at me.

,,Thank you, Carla, you are a treasure" said my mother.

Sometimes I had the feeling that she liked Carla more, although Carla reflected exactly what she never wanted for me.
Carla was someone who didn't care about anything and didn't care about her school or consequences, she even had to repeat this year, that's why she went to my graduation only as a companion.
When I was younger, my mom and I got along well, but the older I got, the more we fought.
Most of the time I feel guilty for being mean to her, but she puts way too much pressure on me.

Still I loved her, she didn't have it easy in life.
My father took his own life when I was 7.
It seems like yesterday, I was about to go into the kitchen and saw my father hanging in the kitchen with a rope tied around his neck.
I didn't remember much more, only that my mother had a breakdown when she found me in the kitchen after 1 hour.
My father had left us with nothing, and my mother had to work shift after shift to keep us afloat.
She didn't tell me much more than that, when she found me I was in tears and standing rooted to the spot.
There weren't many people at his funeral either, just me and my mother.
Not even his family came to his funeral, and I can't even blame them because my father was a terrible person.
After that day, my mother never talked about that incident again.

The only one who knew about it was Carla, she was like a sister to me and my mother also treated her like her own daughter.

Carla also had a hard time in life.
At 5, she was sent from one foster family to another because her parents died of an overdose.
She was found under a bus stop, scared and hypothermia.
She always acted tough, but I knew she cried herself to sleep every night for the first 5 years.

,,Go to the car, I'll be right there," I said.

The two of them went to the car, but I still had the feeling that I had forgotten something.

My necklace!

I quickly ran up to my room and opened my old jewelry box.

How could I have forgotten it?

My grandmother had given me the necklace the day before she died.
When she put it on me, she told me to squeeze it tightly whenever I had another panic attack.

Since the death of my father I suffered from panic attacks and the necklace was about the only thing that could calm me down.
Whenever I had the feeling that it was going to start again, I pressed the chain to my heart and kept saying that everything was going to be all right.

It really helped.
Even though it sounds funny, the chain saved my life a lot of times.

I put the chain back around my neck and went downstairs to Carla and my mom.
When we were all in the car, my mother drove off.

I took one last look at our old little house before I wouldn't see it again for the next few months.

The car ride was quiet, but I noticed that Carla was tense, I guess she did mind having to repeat a year, but I didn't dwell on it.

,,Are you nervous?" Carla asked me.

,,What do you mean?"

,,Well, starting a whole new life in a new city without knowing anyone" she said.

She's right.

,,I haven't thought about it until now, but now that you mention it, yes, I am nervous" I answer nervously.

,,Don't worry college girl, you'll go to the best parties, and who knows, maybe you'll find a hot guy too" she said, and she burst out laughing even though I was just blushing.

My mother cleared her throat when she heard that.

,,Elizabeth, relax, I'm just kidding, we both know that Britt is not the kind of person who goes to parties, let alone meets guys" Carla said to my mother.

I was a little offended because Carla seemed to think I was too uncool to go to parties.
But I can also be relaxed.
I really can.
I just don't see any reason to get drunk at parties.

,,And don't worry, I will personally kill any boy who gets too close to Britney," Carla said.

I know it was meant as a joke, but it didn't sound like one.

,,I've worked way too hard for her to get drunk with any boys at parties," my mom said.

I hated how she said she worked way too hard for it because I was the person who studied and worked her butt off.
Financially she helped me, but I have a half scholarship and I started working at 16, so I can pay a big part myself.

,,Mother, I worked hard for this, not you," I hissed.

,,Ungrateful too, it's getting better and better" she said.

I blushed with anger, and I couldn't wait to get away from her.

The graduation ceremony went by quickly and the ceremony was really nice.
It was just like I had seen in all those high school teen movies.
I made a cardboard gown when I was 9 and imagined how it would be my special day.
But it wasn't.
The ceremony was enjoyable, but no one paid attention to me, only when Carla cheered my name did everyone look up from their phones and clap.

,,Congratulations Britt, you are now officially done with school and a Yale College Girl" said Carla.

,,I wish you could come with me" I said sadly.

,,Don't worry about me, I can take it in this place" she explained confidently.

,,Well, unless Mr. Brown fails me again," she said with a grin.

,,Close your eyes a bit, it's going to be a long ride to college, especially for you Carla, because you have to go there and back" my mother said.

Before I could answer, I heard Carla nodding off and snoring lightly.
I decided to do the same, and I closed my eyes and thought about college.

Would I make friends? What's the dorm like there? Will I make it to the end?

I fell asleep, looking forward to my new life that would soon begin.
