I turn my gaze to Nelly in the dim moonlight as we stop in the glistening lake. The moon reflects off the surface of the lake, creating an luminous display.
I kiss her briefly as my hand trails over her wet hair and her hand does the same to mine.
"You know what we were talking about the other day," she starts to say, "You know, anything?"
"Yeah, anything." I answer.
"I didn't really say much, I apologize for that by the way, but I was stunned when you said you would do anything to protect me, even sacrifice yourself. Is that true? You would do that?" She questions, "For me?"
"Absolutely." I say. "I mean it."
"Wow." She whispers. "I've searched all of my life, looking for someone as caring and thoughtful and as kind as you and I finally have found him."
I kiss her again. In that instant, the flashback fades away. I look at the four angels in the room.
"So you are telling me, this flashback actually happened but you wiped me and Nelly's memory of it?" I ask.
"Yes." The angels answer.
"Why?" I ask.
"Because we were trying to make it easier for you to protect the secret." They explain. "You were getting so close to Nelly and you finally made your move, but we knew that could only result in someone killing Nelly to get the secret from you. Believe it or not, we've helped you out more than you may think."
"Really?" I say. "You kept such a wonderful memory from me? I can't believe this."
I pause and calm myself down. "Alright, well, can you bring back Nelly in exchange for my life or not?"
The angels pause before answering, "Yes. We can."
