The Secret

Chapter 23: Consternation

Consternation is like anxiety, panic, and fear. It sets in as you try to think everything is okay. And that's what is happening to me.

I see my father walking amongst the entire population of mindless zombies and consternation sets in.

In an instant, a flashback comes to me.

"Give us the combination to this box so we can have the secret and we will untie you and your father in the room, thus letting you go." The masked man says.

"I will." I say. "If you untie my father and I first."

"Fine." The masked man hesitates to say.

They untie us and put us together and together, my father and I fight for our lives. We fight in our defense and make it off, thus calling the police and making those people go to prison for kidnapping. Dad still didn't know the secret or anything having to do with it, and he still doesn't know. I hope he never does. I hope he never has to. I just wish I can contain it before Jeremy destroys the entire world. He stole the secret, also known as the earth's energy, and the earth can only go so long without it. If the earth dies, so does the air we breathe. Meaning...if the earth dies, we all die.

"What are we gonna do?" Nelly whispers to me.

We're still behind a building watching as our loved ones pass like zombies.

"I don't know." I say. "If I only would've contained the secret, everything would be okay. But it's not and I failed to contain the secret. Nelly, there's nothing we can do. There is no hope. We are all going to die."

"Stop it." Nelly says. "I know our chances are slim to nothing but if we are going down, let's not go down without a fight. It's the least we can do."

"Die trying." I say.

"Exactly." She says.

"Alright." I comply with her.

"Okay. Now, what do you propose we do?" She asks.

"We're going to blend in. Little by little, we'll learn more about how the energy works. We're gonna learn how it's controlling them, how it does what it does, and so on. By then, we can manipulate it and turn everyone against Jeremy and hopefully get the secret back to where it belongs. We can try. Like you said." I say.

"Brilliant." She whispers. "Thank you for not giving up."

"Let's get going." I say.

We jump in the crowd of people and walk simultaneously to their same steps. We look forward and only forward, as they do.

In the act, I grab and hold Nelly's hand.

"We can do this." I whisper.
