Tag along

*Katie is 14*

I wake up to someone shaking me. I groan and roll over to see Jay standing above me.

"Jay? What's going on?" I say in a groggy morning voice. He smiles a little bit and pushed some stray hairs out of my face. "Morning squirt! Your coming to the district with me today remember?" I think for a minute before nodding. "Oh yeah that today.. I'll start getting ready." He nods and leaves my room.

I get out of bed before heading to my closet to pick out some clothes. I grab a pair of leggings and a sweater quickly pulling them on. I put my hair up in a messy bun before doing some light makeup and brushing my teeth. I grab my phone and AirPods off my night table before leaving my room to meet Jay by the door.

We walk out of the house and out to the car. I get in buckle my seatbelt up and lean my head against the window yawning. I hear Jay chuckle a little bit. "Tired squirt?" I nod sleepily and snuggle into my sweater. "When we get to the district you can take a nap in the break room alright?" I nod too tired to reply.

We arrive at the district and get out of the car. We greet Sargent Platt and make our way upstairs. When we get up there I see the whole team there already talking to each other. "Hey guys! I have a tag along with me today." Everyone looks over at us and smiles.

"Ayyy Katie! Long time no see shirt stuff!" I smile a little. "Hey Adam! And when are you going to stop calling me that? I'm not thaaat short." Everyone just looks at me with an are you serious? Look. I sigh and shake my head slightly.

I look up at Jay. "Can I take a nap? I'm so tired right now." I confess. Jay smiles a bit. "Sure squirt make yourself comfy in the breakroom I'll wake you up in a couple hours." I nod. "Thanks bro!" I say before giving him a quick hug and walking to the breakroom. I close the door after me and make my way to the couch. I set up a pillow. I don't see any blankets anywhere so I just lay down on the pillow falling asleep.

I was running and laughing with my friends at school. We were playing tag on the school playground. I was running away from my friend and decided to hide so I wouldn't be caught. I found a bush by the fence and ran behind it.

I heard footsteps around me and turned. I saw a man looking at me from the other side of the fence. He looked a little scary but Will always says don't judge a book by it's cover so I smiled at him. He smiled back and gave a small wave. "Hey sweetie.. what are you doing?" Will also says don't talk to strangers but this man seems nice enough right? "I'm playing tag with my friends! I'm hiding!" He chuckles a little bit. "That's fun.. I could help you hide. Come with me to my vehicle and they'll never find you." I think for a minute.

"No thanks mister I think we're done our game anyways. My friends stopped running around." He looks mad and grabs at me through the fence. I scream as loud as I can. "Katie! Run! Katie!"

"Katie! Honey! Wake up!" I jolt up from the couch drenched in sweat. I look around to see all of intelligence looking at me worriedly. I burst out sobbing and cling onto Jay who was shaking me awake. Jay hugs me back tightly stroking my hair while whispering sweet nothings into my ear. I sit there in my brothers embrace sobbing for about 5 minutes until my sobs slowly die down into hiccups and sniffles.

I pull away from Jay and look down avoiding eye contact. I feel him wipe my yearns away with his thumbs before lifting my chin up with his finger. I look him in the eyes and a few more tears fall.

"What happened honey? We were all talking when we heard you screaming and saw you thrashing around in your sleep. Bad dream?" "More like bad memory" I mumble. "What was that squirt?" I look up at him. "Oh I was just agreeing with you.. bad dream." He nods

"You want to try sleep again or do you want me to call Will and get him to pick you up? He should be getting off his shift right now." I sniffle a little bit. "Can you please call Will? I just want to go home right now." Jay nods. "Of course I can squirt it's understandable that you wanna go home." I thank him and leave the break room letting him talk to Will.

I walk into the bullpen making my way over to Hailey desk just giving her a big hug. She hugs me back instantly. "You alright short stack?" I nod against her chest just hugging her tighter. She strokes my hair. "Are you going to stay here? Or you going home?" "I'm going home. Jays calling Will right now to come pick me up." She nods and kisses the top of my head still hugging me tightly.

I hear the breakroom door open and then Jays voice. "Hey Katie! I called Will, he's on his way here right now!" I pull away from Hailey and smile at him. "Thanks Jay!" I say making my way over to him and meaning into his side. He wraps his arm around my shoulder and gives my forehead a kiss. "No problem sis!" We both stand there comfortably in each others embrace for a bit until we hear footsteps coming up the stairs and see bright red hair pop up into view.

"Hey bro! Sis!" I smile and rub over to him hugging him tightly. "How was your shift?" I ask him. He smiles. "Yeah good I had a major surgery that went really good!" I smile. "Cool!" He nods. "You ready to go home? Jay told me what happened.." I look down. "Can we just go home? I'll tell you later when we're all home. Right now I just want sleep." He nods and we say bye to everyone and make our way home.

I go straight to bed hoping I don't have another nightmare. Thankfully I didn't and woke up way late that's I planned to. By the time I woke up Jay was home and they were both sitting around the table eating pizza. I make my way over and sit down.

"We'll if it isn't little miss sleeping beauty over here!" Will says while laughing. I roll my eyes playfully and laugh while Jay chuckles. "You sleep good squirt?" I nod. "No bad dreams this time!" They both look at each other. "Talking about that.. what happened this morning Katie?" I look down and sigh. I knew this question was coming.

"Ok.. you have to promise not to freak out.." they look concerned. I sigh and tell them the whole story of what happened at school that day.

By the time I'm done explaining I have tears falling down my face and I swear Will and Jay have tears pricking their eyes. I'm engulfed in a big hug and cry freely into their shoulders.

"Why didn't you tell us Katie?" I sniffle. "Will lost a patient that day and you were in the middle of a rough case that day.." I've been having nightmares ever since but didn't want to bother you.." I admit looking down. They both hug me again tightly.

We move to the couch and the three of us just sit in a comfortable silence enjoying each other's company.
