Despite how much she hated her witch body, it came in handy.
Catalina already had the magical knowledge needed to pull a spell like this off. She had been worried that Elizabeth's body wouldn't be able to handle it. But it turned out to be the perfect candidate.
One, she was blonde. And she could pretend to fit the stereotype so that no one would suspect her. She'd gone to a few shops, clumsily bumping into displays and acting very confused about prices for herbs. She'd gotten everything cheap and in bulk to start out.
While everyone else was dealing with whatever Finn's latest scheme was, she'd snuck into the Lycée and gotten a few items belonging to Esther. The last ingredient would be her blood, which she would need to acquire another way.
Her opportunity came weeks later, when she came to the cemetery, feeling distraught because Kol hadn't contacted her since the night she'd told him to get out of her apartment. Chained up to the walls, she'd found Elijah, appearing to be in some sort of trance.
"Oh my god," she said, rushing forward and extracting a sacrificial knife from her bag of materials. She tried to pick the lock, and when that didn't work, she waved her hand. Unfortunately, they didn't break open. "Come on—"
"And just what are you doing here?"
She whirled around, seeing Esther.
"What is this?" asked Catalina, lowering the blade. "What did you do to him?"
"He's learning the error of his ways," said Esther. "Do not disrupt him. Freeing him will only ruin my plan."
"He doesn't deserve this," said Catalina, slowly getting closer to her. "Let him go, right now."
Esther remained stone-faced. "I won't tolerate you taking command here. Walk away, and I won't have to punish you for this sabotage."
"You're not my mother."
Taking advantage of Elizabeth's size, compared to Lenore, Catalina swept down, stabbing into Esther's side, and immediately sprinted out before the witch could react. She didn't stop running until she made it to the Mikaelson Compound, where she knew Esther wouldn't dare enter.
No one was home. Even better— peace and quiet to get her spell done.
"I don't have much time," she whispered to herself. "Let's get this done."
She wrote and wrote, chanted and chanted. Bound ingredients together as fast as she could. She hardly stopped to take bathroom and food breaks. The day was already ending, and she hadn't had a chance to cast the actual spell yet. She was running out of time. Esther would find her, and if she knew the Mikaelsons weren't home, she'd come in to get her.
"AHH!" shrieked Catalina, suddenly feeling a sharp pain in her arm. She looked down and saw runes being carved onto it. She could read the words 'COME BACK NOW,' clearly a message from Esther.
"Like hell I will, bitch," she muttered, before forcing herself to ignore the pain as she used some of the leftover herbs to whip up a paste that would mute the sting, and also prevent Esther from tracking her by using the cut as a beacon.
She couldn't afford to wonder about Kol. Or about what would happen if Klaus came back and found her in his study without prior notice. She had to keep working.
At last, she had the spell ready. Setting down the knife with Esther's blood, she chanted, "Scen ta Lum ves Victa per Vatis Imparret. Lié cle vie la lumiere le sien lache..."
She could practically sense the way her magic was creating an invisible cage around Esther. Weaving beams over her body to keep her from escaping. A tug in her core let her know that she was doing it right. She continued, until the candles she'd lit to channel had all died out.
