Catalina wanted to drown out her sorrows.
They'd been ordering so many drinks, cracking so many jokes, feeding on so many people, that just for a while, Catalina was able to forget everything that ailed her. Everything that made her feel like the world was caving in on her.
But soon enough, the alcohol weighed down on her, and it made her feel only sadness.
"And I said," she slurred, telling Lucien about when she'd been beating into Klaus, "that he should just kill me... and I could tell he was happy... he didn't feel sorry at all. He was satisfied... to see me so broken..."
Lucien carefully coaxed the bottle of scotch away from her. "I think that's about enough of that."
"No," she whined, reaching for it. "It makes me happy."
"It makes you drunk," corrected Lucien. "And that isn't doing any wonders for you."
She groaned, putting her hands over her face. "I'm a wreck. I'm... terrible."
"You're grieving," corrected Lucien. "Tomorrow, you'll feel a bit better."
"I hate him," Catalina said, putting her head down on the bar. "I hate Klaus. I want him... to suffer."
"Lucky for you, I have already been planning a way to do that."
"Yeah, right... no one's strong enough to beat him. We can't."
"I may have a way. You can help me with it. We'll be rid of them for good. All of them."
"Hold on," said Catalina, who wasn't entirely drunk enough to call for all their deaths. "Not Kol... not... Rebekah..."
"Why not Rebekah?" inquired Lucien. "She's always been a downright bitch to you."
"She's getting better," murmured Catalina. "She really is. Elijah... he supports Klaus all the time. I probably wouldn't care if he died. But he's... still Kol's brother. I don't think he'd want to lose him."
"Then we can kill only Klaus."
"But I don't want to kill him. I want... to just make him suffer. In death, suffering can be coped with. After awhile... my time on the Other Side wasn't all that bad. Knowing him... he'd charm the devil into giving him power. No... we have to keep him alive."
Lucien obviously hadn't intended this. "He's ruined many things. He allowed his brother to compel me to live as him. He took the woman I love."
Catalina made a face. "You want Aurora? Still?"
"Of course I do."
"Lucien," said Catalina, her vision blurring a bit as she sat up. "Let's... be real. She doesn't want you."
He frowned. "Excuse me?"
"She's had... a thousand years... to be with you. And she hasn't. She loves Klaus. Never gonna let him go. The deMartels... they let it get into their heads that they're better than everyone. You'll never be enough for her. And if you kill Klaus, it's only gonna make it worse."
This wasn't what he wanted to hear. "Surely you can't be serious," said Lucien. "Aurora and I had something, when we were younger."
"When you were kids," Catalina muttered. "Before she realized what you two were of a different social status. She allowed that to change... everything. Your friendship ended because she thought she was better than you. She's never gonna see you as her equal. She's a stuck-up little bitch. It's too late. I could talk to her, but..."
Lucien just gritted his teeth, holding his own glass of scotch. "I refuse to believe it."
"Refuse all you want... but it's true. If she wanted you, she'd be with you. Is that what this is about? You want to hurt Klaus... so you can get Aurora?"
