"How are you going to make it up to me, brother?"
Klaus rolled his eyes, looking over at Kol, who was standing in his art room, arms crossed and tapping his fingers impatiently. "Piss off," the hybrid muttered.
Kol raised his eyebrows. "That doesn't sound like an answer, Nik. You shoved a dagger in my chest, and left me daggered for ninety-six years. Mother dearest wants us to get along. I could beat you, and I could hurt you in other ways, but I'm offering you an alternative. Give me what I want, and I'll let bygones be bygones."
Klaus scoffed. "I know precisely what you want. And the answer is no. You're not getting her back."
"So," said Kol, walking closer, "you do have her."
"I don't have her," said Klaus, though his lips twitched into a wicked grin. "But I do know where she is. And if you don't stop bothering me, little brother, you'll never find her."
"Fine. I'll have Mother do a Locator Spell. I'm sure she'll be more than happy to—"
Klaus sped to him, coming up right in front of him. "Tell me the truth," said Klaus lowly. "What were you two up to, in 1914?"
"I told you before and I'll tell you now," lied Kol, managing a poker face. "I wanted to use the Fauline diamond to propose to her."
"You had one thousand years to propose to her," said Klaus sharply. "And you didn't. What changed, brother?"
"Oh, I don't know," said Kol. "You only just daggered me for no bloody reason, over and over, and chased her to the ends of the Earth, threatening to kill her. We never felt safe. It was different, in the 1900s. We were all getting along. We all loved New Orleans. The timing was perfect."
Klaus rolled his eyes. "You're a lovesick fool, Kol. Fine. If it will make you quit your incessant nagging, I shall take you to her."
While Esther was preparing for the ball that would take place that weekend, the two brothers journeyed to Kentucky, and right into Mammoth Cave National Park.
"Classic, Nik," said Kol. "You left her to rot in a cave?"
Klaus ignored him, leading him through a part of the cave that was off-limits to visitors. They walked all the way until they found a cage, which was only just holding the walls up. Chunks of rock were littered around its interior, and as Kol looked closer, he realized it wasn't from the ceiling. It was from the walls, where claw marks were evident.
Like those made by a creature trying desperately to escape.
Klaus brought out a key, opening the door of the cage. In the corner was a body, curled up on its side. "There she is," said Klaus, handing Kol a blood bag he'd brought. "Go on. Wake her."
Kol was suspicious. "This cage wouldn't have held her. If you're lying to me, Nik—"
"It's her, I assure you," said Klaus. "I had vampires stationed here for decades, waiting for her to fully dessicate. She could have broken out of the cage, but she would never have made it past a group of twenty ancient vampires. Not to mention I ah... had her chained up and muzzled for the first few weeks."
Kol held back a sneer, rushing forward to the body, turning it around and seeing the desiccated, but familiar face of his lover. He ripped open the blood bag, shoving it into her mouth and making her drink. Her eyes had snapped open, and she'd reached her hand out, grabbing at the bag and growling as she started to devour the rest of it.
"It's me, love," said Kol as she sat up, looking around wildly. "It's me."
"Kol?" she said hoarsely. "What are you doing here?"
