Mr and Mrs Potter, of Godric's Hollow, seemed quite normal. But if you looked closely, and listened to what they said, you wouldn't understand a thing. For one, their children, one of which was adopted, were constantly nagging their parents about buying a broomstick. This was not the only thing though. They also never went to school, nor were they home-schooled; however, they were nearing 11. If they ever did talk about school, they asked to go to Hogwarts. The last thing, which very few people knew, was that they knew magic.Lily Potter (Formerly Lily Evans) was a 30-year-old woman, with long black hair and green eyes. She went to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when she was younger, which is when she met James Potter, also 30 years old, with hair that stuck up in odd places and round spectacles framing his face. Lily was a Muggle-Born and was constantly bullied for this. Many people (including Severus Snape, the enemy of James), called her Mudblood. James stuck up for her and they started dating in their 6th Year at Hogwarts, later marrying in 1978. This was during the Wizarding War, against Voldemort. Voldemort is the most famous dark wizard of all time. He has a huge gang of people, named the death eaters, who kill squibs, muggles, muggle-borns and sometimes even pure/half-blood. He is the reason Neville has a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead. Voldemort murdered Neville's parents, as well as his grandmother, and tried to kill Neville when he was just a baby but failed in this. No one knows why, but Neville, to this day, is the only person to ever survive a killing curse, and he was only a baby when it happened. Voldemort was ruined, turned to pieces some say, but everyone is still scared. In fact, they are so scared, that most wizards and witches won't even say his name, but instead You-Know-Who or He Who Must Not Be Named. The attempted murder of Neville left a lightning-bolt scar, the only fascinating thing about Neville, really. The Potters happily obliged to take Neville in, having faced Voldemort 3 times before and on many occasions fighting his followers. As Neville grew, everyone watched to see who he would turn into, but they were disappointed. Neville was the most ordinary wizard you could hope for, with a past like his. In fact, some would even say he was less than ordinary. You see there were rumours going around saying that he was a squib.
In the Wizarding World, there are different types of blood statuses. There is pure-blood, which means everyone in your family is a wizard or witch, half-blood, some people in your family are wizards or witches, muggle-born, everyone is a muggle (non-magic people) and squibs, which is when your family is magical, but you are not. Many people, including Voldemort, are against the fact that muggle-borns should be allowed a magical education. They think that only purebloods should be allowed to use magic. Some even believe that muggle-borns stole magic. They also believe that Squibs should be locked away or sent to muggle schools. However, Neville was not a squib, for he had shown many signs of magic over the years, but this did not stop people from talking. Despite his magical heritage and upbringing, what he said next, shocked everyone.
"Dad! I beat Harry at 3 a side Quidditch! I actually did it!" Neville Longbottom said. "And he had Fred and Luna on his team. He was a short, stout boy, with blond hair and a very unathletic body. How he beat the next boy who walked in was very perplexing. Harry Potter was thin and very athletic. He had messy hair, which stuck up at the back and had brilliant green eyes. Had it not been for the eyes, he would be the spitting image of the father who stood, a look of bewilderment on his face.
Quidditch is a wizarding game played on broomsticks. There are 4 balls and 7 players on each side. Three of them are called Chasers. They throw the Quaffle (a red ball about the same size as a football) and try to get it into a hoop to gain 10 points for their team. There is also the Keeper, who defends the hoops. There are two beaters and two bludgers (balls that try to knock you off your broom). The beaters have a club each and make sure that the bludgers don't hit anyone. The last ball is the golden snitch. A tiny ball, about the size of a walnut, the golden snitch is a small, gold ball, with long fluttering wings. It is a seeker's job to catch it. If they catch it, the game ends and their team gets 150 points. A game only ends once someone catches the snitch, so they can go on for a long time. The record is three months, and they had to substitute players a lot, so others could get food and sleep.
"Good Job Neville," he said forcing a smile. "How about you go upstairs while I talk to your brother?"
The boy nodded and ran upstairs yelling "MUM!". As soon as he was out of reach, the father looked down at Harry, eyebrows raised.
"I let him win. It is his birthday today!" Harry explained."You're a good friend. Run upstairs and join Neville. He'll probably be celebrating upstairs."
Sure enough, when Harry ran upstairs, he was greeted with streamers everywhere and a failed attempt at balloons. But Neville wasn't jumping on the bed. In fact, he wasn't even standing. Instead, he was sitting on the bed holding an envelope. There was another one on the bed, as well as two owls. They knew from all the stories, all the talk, these were their Hogwarts Letters.
