The days that followed were just as quiet.
I would spend my mornings with Eric. Sometimes we'd go out for a walk or for a run. Dylan was usually home early in the afternoon. Since nothing was really happening around the pack, we had been spending more time with each other.
We had gone to dinner at Emma and Benjamin's house several times during the week.
As was Emma's usual topic of conversation, she was trying to convince me give her grandchildren. Usually Benjamin helped me change the subject. This time it was Dylan who seemed to go along with all of Emma's ideas about us getting pregnant.
It was making me nervous that Dylan was having thoughts like that. I wanted to have kids at a point in my life. I just didn't want them now. We hadn't heard anything about Alpha Jackson or Alpha Nicolas, but that didn't mean they wouldn't attack us.
I hardly noticed when the days passing by turned to weeks. Then the weeks turned into months. It was only the holidays and the seasons changing that warned me about the time passing by.
Throughout that time, I settled into the routine. The pack was doing fine, and everything seemed- normal for once.
I was standing on the back patio, staring at the tall trees up ahead.
It was already midday, but the sky hadn't cleared up. All morning it had been pouring outside. I took the small break when the rain had stopped to go outside. It was fresh, and the cold air was hitting my skin.
Eric had told me to go out with a jacket, but I ignored him. Once outside, I was glad I did. I was thinking that I should've slipped on some shoes, because I could feel the mud between my toes.
My Wolf made a purring sound, snapping me out of my thoughts.
A pair of hands covered my eyes, and I could feel a presence standing behind me. His taller form was pressed closely to my back.
"You know I can feel when you're close to me, right?" I asked without pulling away.
"It's nice to pretend that you don't," Dylan said, making me chuckle.
"You're home early," I told him, finally turning to face him.
"It's raining. Only the guys patrolling are out. Everyone else is indoors," he said.
"It looks so nice." I looked up at the sky. The dark clouds were everywhere.
"You're going to get sick you know? Why are you barefoot?"
Dylan wrapped his arms around my waist, picking me up from the ground.
"Maybe it was my devious plan to have you carry me inside."
Dylan chuckled, shaking his head.
"I think I like your plan then," he said, walking toward the house. Just as Dylan was closing the door, a light drizzle began to fall.
Eric was already gone by the time we made it inside.
"Eric isn't sleeping over?" I asked Dylan, not feeling Eric's presence anywhere inside the house.
"He said he needed to talk to Scott," Dylan replied, shrugging.
Lately, Eric's parents had gotten more insistent about finding him a mate. He had been staying over at our house or with Jace. Whenever Eric did go home, I could easily tell he'd been there. He would come back in a bad mood.
I was sitting down on Dylan's chair, in his office. I moved the chair next to the window and just stared outside.
The rain was coming down harder than before. I touched the glass window, feeling the light drumming vibrations from where the water would hit it.
Everything inside the house felt dark and gloomy. It was like the weather outside had taken over the mood inside.
Dylan had gone upstairs to shower, and I was waiting for him down here.
We were going to Eric's house for Dinner. Something told me that's why Eric had left with Scott. He was probably trying to get off the hook from going to see his parents.
I was so lost in my thoughts, that I hardly noticed the house phone ringing.
I stood up to grab it, and went back to the chair next to the window.
"Hello," I said into the phone.
"I was hoping you would answer."
"Jake? How did you get this number?"
"You're cell is disconnected and my dad had this number listed as Dylan's. I need to talk to you," he said, sounding shaken up.
"What's wrong?"
I automatically felt worried when I heard his tone. Of course, the only reason he would call was if something bad was happening.
"We're attacking."
They were two simple words that made my heart drop.
I almost regretted answering the phone. It seemed like every time someone called to our house, it was just for bad news.
Of course if I hadn't answered the phone, I wouldn't know what's happening.
"When?"
"Two days from now. Everyone is going. Nicolas is leading and he looks determined to win."
"Why are they attacking now? It's been months and they haven't done anything. I thought- I thought they would leave us alone."
"They were getting ready. Leila, it's not just the two packs coming," Jake said, more serious than before.
"What do you mean with that?" I asked, getting up from the chair.
"Nicolas somehow managed to get Rogues," Jake added.
"I'm really sorry, now all-" before Jake continued talking, I disconnected the call.
He had told me all I needed to know.
I thought that after all these months passed by, they had finally given up. I thought Alpha Nicolas would leave us alone. Alpha Jackson doesn't even have a reason to attack us.
It got me so angry. It got my Wolf angry. I unconsciously let out a loud feral growl. Dylan stepped into the office in that moment.
He looked at me strangely. His hair looked darker because it was wet. He was only wearing a pair of basketball shorts, leaving his chest uncovered.
I shook my head, thinking back to problem that was coming our way.
"What's wrong?" Dylan asked, walking toward me. He was looking at me cautiously.
"They're coming."
It was all I needed to say for him to know what I meant.
