"....Dan has lost a lot of blood, and is going to have to stay in the hospital for a few more nights."
That's it? That's what he was sorry to tell me. Yes it's bad that Dan has to stay longer, but with the doctors tone I thought Dan was dead. I sighed in relief startling and confusing the doctor. Oh god he probably thought I was crazy sighing in relief that my "boyfriend" is worse than I thought. How deep had he cut? Did he really want to kill himself? And why?
"Can I see him?" I asked.
"He's in critical condition...."
Critical!? This is definitely worse than I thought it was. If I loose him, I wouldn't know what to do.
"Critical?!" I said ruddily cutting off the doctor.
"Yes, I'm sorry." The doctor looked at me, almost like he was checking to make sure that I was ok. "He is expected to make a full recovery, but he has an unusual blood type."
"Oh." I said nodding understandingly. "What is it exactly?"
"He is o-, only 8% of Caucasians have this blood type. So it makes it hard to find a donor."
No, there was no way he was o-. This was too surreal, that's my blood type. If they needed a donor, there's one right here. Me. And I was more than happy to give Dan my blood.
I laughed. "I'm o-"
"Well that's perfect! Would you be ok with donating some blood?"
"Of course I would." I shoot the doctor a smile.
"That's great I'll get some paperwork!"
He was so enthusiastic it made me laugh a little.
"So can I see him?" I asked.
"Yes, he's a little delirious though."
I nodded.
"He's in room 233"
"Thank you."
I walked into the hallway where Dan's room was located. There were so many people, most of which were nurses. Some were family members, and what distressed me most was that most of them were crying. Hospitals were a sad place to work. I mean they had their happy times but they were all so depressing. I don't know how my family bears them.
I turned the corner and stood in front of the door that read 233. I heard faint crying sounds coming from inside his room. It seemed like there was more than one person in Dan's room.
I stopped for a moment before I opened up the door trying to figure out if people were in his room. Just when I was about to open the door, a man and a women came barging out, the woman crying. She saw me and was startled.
They both looked rich, real rich. The woman had red, definitely dyed hair. She was wearing a long trench coat, under it looked to be a green dress. She was also wearing 4 diamond necklaces, let's not even get me started on her like 7 million dollar wedding ring. The man looked a lot like Dan, he had chestnut brown hair, with some gray streaks in it. He too was wearing very expensive clothes.
I looked at myself, I was sweaty and I was wearing running clothes. That's a great first impression. I sighed.
"Oh excuse me dear." The woman said.
I moved over to the side.
The doctor came walking down the hallway towards where we were all standing. He was carrying a needle and a blood bag, to which I was almost positive were for me.
"Doctor, it's nice to meet you." The man reached his hand out for the doctor to shake. "I'm Seth Howell, Dans uncle." The man gestured towards his wife. "And this is my wife, Clara."
Uncle and Aunt! These people were related to Dan! Oh god, I defiantly did not make a good first impression.
The doctor shook both of their hands.
"It's nice to meet you too, Seth and Clara. Your nephew is doing ok, he just has a rare blood type. But his girlfriend has offered to donate." He gestured towards me.
Both Clara and Seth looked at me in astonishment. Why had I said I was his girlfriend? Do they approve of me, will they be able to look past my sweaty running clothes? Wait I'm not even his girlfriend, why am I worrying about this stuff?
"Hi." I said smiling at all of them.
"Oh my gosh! You're so pretty! How did Dan get a girl like you?!" Clara asked.
I was blushing hard, and I think they noticed it. Do I tell them the truth? Do I tell them that technically I'm not his girlfriend? I think it was better just to leave it alone.
"I'm going to go see Dan." I said.
All three of them nodded.
"When you are done just come to the front and ask for me and we can get you all set up." The doctor said.
"Nice meeting you sweetie! Hopefully we will see you at the Thanksgiving family dinner this year." Clara said enthusiastically.
Seth smiled and they both turned around and left. Oh god what did I just sign up for? I wasn't even Dans girlfriend, yet. I sighed, and pulled the door open.
