Sirens echoed like haunting wails in the night as flying patrol units whizzed overhead, causing debris to rain down on one lone flyer, who hid beneath an old abandoned bridge. It hovered carefully over the water that rushed briskly beneath it. With only a foot difference between where it was and the water, a tall floating creature was cautious as it moved about, swiftly and silently fixing an electrical outlet outside the ship's hall.
After a brief moment of silence, the creature moved away from the ship and over to the edge of the bridge's clearing, peering out over the rolling hills and down to the meta-city beneath it, just barely leaving the safety of their temporary hidden sanctuary. They could faintly see the flickering lights of the patrol flyers in the distance. With a baited breath and slow blinks, it waited until the lights were far out of sight before turning around to finish working on the ship.
A bright flash of blue light startled the creature, as the light followed by a loud recording of a voice "-managed to save one of my pets-"
"Ruma!" The creature stood and quickly rushed into the ship's entrance.
"-my exquisite creations."
"Keep that off." the creature hissed.
Quickly, the light went off. He stood at the entrance of the ship and stared into the darkness before humming soberly and turning around and glided back down the ramp to place the metal cover back into place. The cover snapped with a sharp ring that echoed around seemingly going on forever. The loud sound stunned the creature, he waited for his nerves to calm before rushing back inside the ship.
He rushed about in the dark using his previous knowledge of the place to navigate. As he reached the helm, he could see the bit of lights from the shields being down. He plopped into the pilots seat and started to turn everything on.
"Greetings, Nephew." the message echoed through the Helm. With the smallest bit of light peering out from under a blanket in a seat behind his own."Off Ruma, now," demanding that she listen this time. A soft whine escaped from the old brown blanket that was more scratchy than anything.
Only for a moment before flicking it back on. "You'll need to be crafty and get more anyway possible."
He finally reached back and snatched off the blanket, revealing a small female humanoid with healing burn wounds wrapped tenderly in a medical cloth. Her hair, being unkempt for some time, lay matted against her head. "Give it up." he said again, snatching the device from the small woman's hands, she tried to reach out to retrieve it back only to have it pulled ever further away from her.
In their small struggle over the device, the play button was pressed again, and the message replayed. The blue light flickered, showing a small hologram pop up. It moved stiffly as he spoke.
"If you see this, our government has caught on to my experiments." it got muffled a bit as the girl reached forward to grab at it again, and the device got tangled under the pilot's robes "-does not execute me; I will terminate my own life."
He was finally able to get her to settle back down into the seat behind him as he shut off the device. The ship was now running long enough to start the takeoff process. That was where his focus went, and it quickly became overrun by the sounds of sobs that were attempted to be muffled.
"Please don't start that now." He leaned back in the captain's chair, looking out into the night, watching as the world he was raised in was desperately trying to find him. He shoved the device into the cabinet near him. He pressed on the string before him to slowly glide the ship out into the open sky.
He felt something move at his side, and he looked down just in time to see that the cabinet had opened again.
"Your new companion is my last gift. Ruma, the only survivor—" The driver let her finish the message, as it was now too dangerous for him to fight her. "Good luck—follow your cords." Tears streamed down her face, her chin quivered, and her body shook. Ruma curled around the device and stayed on the floor.
She played it several times as he got the ship into place. After that last play-through, she finally put it down. "Well, Ruma, once we get settled, we will have to start diving into Uncle's old contacts and maybe cash in a bunch of those favours." he put the craft coordinates in to head towards the Interstar travel port. He reached back, picked her up with one hand, and gently placed her in the seat next to him. Hitting the auto buckle button. He looked back at the coordinates, Keeping himself in the darkest parts of the sky as he manoeuvred to avoid authorities.
He pulled on the bar, and the ship rattled as it began to pull off the ground more than it had initially, taking it higher and higher into the sky before booking it off.
After they broke the planet's atmosphere, rustling came from his side. He looked over as Ruma unbuckled herself and climbed into his lap to lie down. He huffed as he looked down and petted her head softly. "Since you are my companion, you can sit there as long as you behave."
