Name: Hotaru Furusawa - meaning 'Firefly' in Japanese and is a direct link to Hotaru's use of fireflies in ninjutsu. Her last name means 'Old River' in the same language where the origin refers to how fireflies spend a stage of their life in water.

Background:

Hotaru is born into the Furusawa clan. A Shinobi Clan of Insect Users similar to the Aburame and the Kimizuru Clans who use Beetles and Wasps respectively. The Furusawa Clan hosts a rare kind of firefly that they have a symbiotic relationship with that allows the fireflies to live longer by feeding off of their chakra. The Clan is located in the land of Hot Water where the climate helps with the breeding of the Hikarichu Fireflies, where they live a reclusive live with little contact with other clans, barring the late Uzumaki clan before the massacre of Uzushio where the majority of their members had perished trying to defend their allies, forcing the remaining of the clan go into hiding. Since then, the Furusawa Clan has faded from the memories of most of the elemental nations, however, a bounty still follows them from the beginning of the second shinobi war from Earth, Lightning and Water who had been enemies of Uzushio. Many believed the clan to have perished however the bounty remained. This leads the pre Akatsuki Kakuzu into finding to location of the Furusawa clan while following a lead he found while tracking a bounty in hot water and wiping out the clan for their bounties. During the massacare, Hotaru had been going through a ritual that would allow her to take a special kind of Hikarichu firefly into her body that only those of the main branch could host, and it was during this time where she was hidden away during the process that her clan had been wiped out nigh completely. When she woke, all she could smell was blood and as she returned to the clan compound, everywhere she could see where the headless corpses of her family and clansmen, and around them, millions of dead or dying Hikarichu that could not survive without their host's chakra. She spent the following weeks burying her clan and saving as many surviving Hirakichu as she could before they all perished. Eventually, Hotaru was found by Hidden Leaf Shinobi after they had received an SOS from the long-forgotten clan and went to investigate, only to find the sole child survivor. They brought Hotaru back to Konoha and she was placed with the Aburame Clan for her own protection and joined the Academy a few months after arriving in Konoha and getting settled in. She didn't talk much in the Academy and would often tend to doze off during the day as her clan were mainly nocturnal and active during the night. She ends up befriending the ever-silent Shino Aburame and they become inseparable from then on.

When a long-forgotten clan gets wiped out overnight, a sole survivor is left in the rubble. Word gets to an old ally and all they find is a child no older than seven in the aftermath. With nothing left and only her fireflies to keep her company, Hotaru joins the ninja back to their village.

Thus begins the life of Hotaru the Hidden Leaf Kunoichi as she faces the trials laid before her and gains allies and loved ones along the way.

Suggestions:

The Furusawa clan once had a close alliance with the Uzumaki Clan since before the creation of the ninja villages though were mainly a neutral clan that kept away from war and conflict. However, then they did fight, they were ruthless as they didn't hold back and since so little was known about them other than their gentle nature, they were underestimated and took full advantage of this.
