When Evan finally got home, he had a bubble of happiness inside him that he didn't think anything could burst. Unlocking the door, he pushed it open and went inside. The lights were out.

"Mom! I'm home!" he called. No reply. "Mom? Hello?"

Striding into the kitchen, he spotted a tell-tale pink post-it on the fridge. Already knowing what it was going to say, Evan ripped it off the fridge and tossed it into the trash without bothering to read it. It would tell him that she'd picked up an extra shift, that she wouldn't be home until late tonight, and that she'd left money for dinner on the table. And then she would have drawn a heart to remind him how much she "loved" him. Yeah right.

Sure enough, a twenty dollar bill sat on the table. Evan left it where it was, not in the mood for dinner.  Instead he went upstairs to his room, trying not to feel resentful that his mother wasn't home. Again.

Realising he hadn't looked at his phone since this morning, Evan opened it up. Straight away, he was greeted by you have 18 unread messages from Zoe Murphy.

Sighing, he opened up the chat.

Zoe Murphy: Hiii

Zoe Murphy: How are you

Zoe Murphy: Obviosuly

Zoe Murphy: And i can plan it on a day where connors out so dont worry about that

Zoe Murphy: Let me know as soon as you can if youre up for it

Zoe Murphy: See you soon

Zoe Murphy: Xxxxxx

Evan read all of it, the sinking feeling in his stomach getting worse with every message. Forcing himself to go with Jared's advice, he shakily typed out a response.

Evan Hansen: Hi Zoe, sorry, I was out all day. I'm alright, thank you, how are you? Dinner with your parents sounds great, just let me know when. Thank you for arranging it without Connor, I wouldn't want him to take it the wrong way, as previously discussed. See you soon, xxx

Send.

Not more than a minute later, his screen lit up with Zoe Murphy is typing...

Evan chucked his phone on the bed. "Fuck off, Zoe," he muttered. Then, feeling bad, he went to pick up his phone to see what she'd written.

Zoe Murphy: Evan, you type like my grandma 😂

Zoe Murphy: Hows this friday????

Zoe Murphy: For dinner

Zoe Murphy: Connor normally goes out on fridays and wanders around parks and shit by himslef.

Trying not to be hurt by the first message, he responded to the rest before switching his phone off and flopping on the bed.

Evan Hansen: Friday is great, can't wait.

Oh, he could wait. He so could wait.
