Chapter 9: Something Chilling

"Uh excuse me if I could have everybody's attention, please!" Cisco yelled in the middle of the precinct floor carrying something on his back that made him look like a ghostbuster. Barry wasn't there yet but since you were helping Star Labs work with the police station to capture Leonard Snart you were at this meeting.

"You have our attention Mr. Ramone," the captain said.

"Ok. check it. Dr. Wells and I, we took your ballistic shields and we lined them with a pretty sweet, compacted heating ribbon designed to repel temperature attacks especially those reaching absolute zero like captain colds gun."

"it's supposed to keep us from turning into popsicles?" one officer asked sort of sarcastically.

"Uhm yeah, they will." Cisco assured them.

"How are we supposed to trust anything from Star Labs after you nuked the city," another officer said.

Cisco and Dr. Wells looked at each other.

"You're right. You're right." Cisco spoke. "You shouldn't trust us. What happened a year ago that was our fault, and we can't change the past as much as we wish we could. But tomorrow is a different story. Tomorrow is a different thing. We just want the chance to make things better." CIsco looked at you and you gave him an encouraging smile. He gave a small smile back. "Observe." He turned around putting on his goggles and aimed at the target. The shield froze before it began melting away effectively saving the person behind it. Everyone walked up to it in awe.

"Dummies are one thing. My officers are another." the captain said to Cisco before walking away.

You went to Cisco and congratulated him on their idea to effectively shield the police from the cold gun. You knew it may not solve everything, but it was a step in the right direction.

A little later that day you and Barry found yourselves rushing into the precinct to find Joe. You heard about the attack of Captain Cold and now it seems like he has a partner in crime.

"Hey, hey, Joe you okay?" You asked him on your way over to him. 

He was just getting off the phone "I'll call you back. I'm fine. Snart's new partner. He got his hand-held flame thrower. Almost everyone was treated on scene, but we got two in the burn unit though."

"I'm sorry I should have listened to you" Barry apologised.

"it's all good but the next time Snart and his pyro pal show up well make them sorry they ever messed with you guys. I gotta go to the hospital." And Joe walked away.

What was supposed to be a simple plan to capture Leonard had just escalated. You and Barry headed to Star Labs to figure out the next steps.

"Guys you have to come look at this" Cisco hurried into the main room at Star Labs. "When the heat gun was fired it increased the surrounding temperature of the air dramatically." Cisco pointed to a layout of the heat gun on the screen. "It would have been like an extreme heatwave." Cisco paused before grinning "heatwave..." he said naming Captain Colds partner.

"Nice!" you said liking the name.

"Stop doing that" Dr. Wells said wanting him to get to the point.

"Okay. I measured both the output of the cold and heat components, right? And while the cold gun achieves absolute zero the heat gun successfully reaches absolute hot or the hottest temperature an object can reach."

"So potentially these two guns could cancel each other out." Dr. Wells said thinking.

"Yeah, but to do that you'd have to make them cross streams." Cisco said.

"Like Ghost Busters?" You said laughing to yourself because of how you thought Cisco looked earlier at the precinct.

"That film is surprisingly scientifically accurate." Cisco admitted. Of course, he would analyze the scientific accuracy of movies. 

"It's really quite funny" Dr. Wells said though you weren't sure he really was amused.

Barry's phone suddenly rings. He answers. "Hey Joe, what's up?"

His face turns serious before looking at you and telling you Joe needs you guys. He sped off fast without telling anyone why or Goodbye. You knew it must be serious. You said a quick sorry before speeding off yourself.

You were at another crime scene of Captain Cold's and his new partner Heatwave only this one was more personal. 

"Joe anything?" Barry asked.

"There's no sign of Caitlyn." You and Barry both walked over to find the driver's side of the car completely frozen. You hoped she wasn't hurt.

"I guess when he couldn't get us to show up the first time, he took something that he knew we would come for."  you sighed.

Barry shook his head. "We're getting her back we have to find Snart."

"Damn right we do. Come on let's go" Joe said leading you guys out of the crime scene.

You guys made it back to the precinct hoping to get a lead on Snart.  

"Joe! Joe! We got a hit!" You hear Eddie say running down the stairs. "Second pair of prints they belong to a Mick Rory" Eddie handed the file over to joe.

"Who's he?" Barry asked him.

"Big time arsonist. Him and Snart worked a job last year that went bad. Half of Rory's body was burned in a fire that got out of control. He escaped from an ambulance on his way to the hospital and hasn't been seen since. Why would they kidnap someone like Caitlyn?"

"Joe! Thawne! it's on every station" the captain rushed in and turned on the tv.

Once the tv was on you see Caitlyn struggling as Mick Rory held her and Snart looking into the camera. "Oh my grodd" you said under your breath. 

"Greeting's citizens of central city. I am Leonard Snart. But you can call me Cold." I guess he did like the name Cisco gave him you thought. " I'm gonna make this very simple for everyone. Those red and blue streaks you've been hearing whispers about. The one's mysteriously saving people these past few months. Well surprise, they're real. The red one calls himself" Snart laughs "the flash. Don't know about the blue streak though. Might I suggest something...chilly." He said powering up his cold gun. "Quarter of main. Tonight sundown. Come out wherever you are. Show the whole world your real or this woman dies."

"No don't come for me stay away!" Caitlyn said as she was dragged off by Mick Rory and Snart turned the camera off.
