A Rather Strange Meeting

Izana---

I decided to leave my workload behind and try to sleep hours ago, but all I managed to do was lie in bed staring up at the ceiling in the darkness. I finally gave up and made myself a cup of tea from the private stash of imprted tea I kept in my office, then settled in the large arm chair in front of the fire in my room. It's been relatively peaceful but I can't seem to get my mind to rest. I shift in my chair as I hear the doors to my balcony open and close quietly. Perhaps my time has come sooner than expected. That or it's a common thief or assassin who was unlucky about their choice of entry. I have guards positioned just inside the doors to my private quarters, though that is through these doors and at the end of the hall. I'd simply have to shout and they could hear me but it would take them a few seconds to get here. If it's the Reaper, I won't call for them, if it is, I may not be able to even if I wanted.

The doors to my room open and a subtle thud across the room reaches my ears. I'm not sure if the intruder even knows I'm here. I sigh and focus my attention on the guards in my doorway as they tell me a dangerous presence had been spotted on the grounds but they got away from Obi, Zen's little troublemaker attendant. I wave them away with orders to increase the patrols around the grounds and place more security around my brother.

The guards leave and I wait for the slight rustling signaling my uninvited guest moving from their hiding place, but I don't hear anything. Considering where they entered, they're likely hiding beneath my bed.

"You can come out now." I wait a moment before sighing and trying again. "Person hiding under my bed, come out."

I suppress my smug smirk as a tall figure in a black hooded cloak gets to their feet. They're on this side of the bed now which is slightly more dangerous for me but at least I can see where they are now.

"I've been expecting you."

The figure, a woman based on build, tenses slightly before speaking. "What?"

"You are the Reaper, yes? I knew it would be a matter of time before you came for me."

"Why do you assume such things?" Her voice is soft and smooth but has a hint of monotone that I assume is due to her line of work.

"You match the typical reports of the appearances the Reapers take on. I followed the trend of deaths stemming from the newest Reaper and figured I may end up on the list considering the status of the previous victims. You also move far more silently than the average assassin."

She stays silent for a moment before speaking again. "Why did you not report me?"

"It's simple," I answer between a sip of tea. "I want to die."

"That's stupid."

I chuckle quietly and place my cup on the table. "And why is that?"

"You're a prince with the world at his finger tips capable of getting anything you desire."

"All that glitters is not gold, Reaper. Sometimes the things you want most you can't get, even as a prince."

"If you say so," she hums quietly before sighing. "So, I've never dealt with one of you so alert or willing, so I suppose I'll be nice. How do you want this done? Poison, stabbing, beheading though your head is not necessary, I could hang you, break your neck, toss you from the balcony, I'm sure there's more I could do as well."

"You have quite the skill set, don't you?" I muse, noticing her tick off the options on her hands.

They're covered by black leather gloves save for her fingers. It's the most of her actual body I've seen and it only shows that her skin is rather pale.

"I don't particularly mind mode of death, but since I have family that will be affected by this, I'd prefer something a little less traumatizing for him."

"Death is always traumatizing regardless of mode, but I can make that work."

Reaper reaches in her cloak pocket, then hesitates and instead reaches for a small vial of a silvery liquid hanging from her throat on a dark cord. She takes a step forward the pauses and tilts her head slightly before sighing.

"You have company arriving. If I do anything untraumatizing to you now, they'd be able to save you."

She tucks the vial away and adjusts her hood before moving toward the balcony again.

"Don't worry, Izana Wistaria. Your death is imminent."

As the balcony doors click closed, my bedroom doors open. It's the guards again, informing me that the figure hasn't been seen again so they think the person left. I love knowing the things I know without them knowing. It only shows that the guards that defend our castle aren't as well trained as they should be. I dismiss them again and wait for her to come back, but the doors don't open again. What a shame. My death will be delayed but I don't doubt that she will return since her job isn't done. I hadn't expected her to talk with me or even give me an option on my cause of death. She's interesting to say the least, even beyond being a part of the line of Reapers. I'll have to add information to my notes later. I sigh softly and make another cup of tea before leaving my bedroom for my office. Now that I know she's coming for me now, I can start to make preparations for my departure. I couldn't quite do too much for risk of information being discovered and causing unsettlement within the castle. All I have to do now is get as much ready as I can until my time comes.
