alex's pov-
"i just want her back, mer." i cried, standing outside the icu, waiting. "she's gonna come back." the woman promised, bringing me into her embrace, where i began to sob, my grip on her tightening. y/n had been unconscious for nearly five days, and i had barely left her side. "i think we could wake her today." april smiled, looking at callie, who nodded. "she's making good progress." callie added. "derek wants to check her brain activity again, torres i want you to get her wounds checked, make sure they're healing correctly, kepner i want you to go over everything, make sure she's had some fluids today and do observations and one of the interns is gonna draw some blood. hopefully, if everything is well, we should be able to bring her back." owen nodded, grinning. the two women nodded, going about what they had been asked to do, while meredith brought me away from the scene. "see, she might be coming back to us today." she smiled. "go get a shower and some clean clothes on. i'll get my intern to finish off my charts and i won't leave her side alex. i'll call you if anything changes, okay?" i nodded, grabbing my phone and keys, leaving the woman alone.when i arrived back at the hospital, y/n still looked the same. meredith looked very hopeful though, like she was trying to contain herself. "what?" i grumbled as i entered the room. "they're waking her up, alex. today!" she stood up, watching as my jaw dropped slightly, a small smile creeping onto my face. "really?" i asked, rubbing my eyes. "it's true. we were just coming to make sure you were back, karev." hunt smiled, before walking in. once he gave her the medications, we had to wait for her to start fighting the ventilation tube. "come on, y/n." i whispered, holding her hand. i laid my head against her hand, praying that she would wake up. when i heard her trying to fight the tube, m y head snapped up straight away, as the nurse came in to remove it. i smiled, my vision beginning to be clouded with tears of happiness i was currently feeling. owen and meredith had left me alone with her, as she slowly recovered. i hated this part the most.
it had been two hours and she was still asleep, her body recovering to the level needed to be awake. the only thing i continued to remind myself was that she was breathing by herself, and a couple of days ago, she wasn't. it was progress. i was beginning to fall asleep, my hand still had a firm grip on y/n's. however, i was awoken when i felt her hand moving, my body jolting upright. my eyes were met with hers, and for the first time, i was speechless. "hey." she croaked, sounding concerningly weak. "oh my god." i sighed, leaning forward to wrap my arms around her smaller frame. "i thought i'd lost you." i cried, my grip on her body tightening, causing y/n to groan in pain. "sorry." i let go, sitting up. "i'm gonna go get hunt, i'll be back." i nodded towards her, squeezing her hand before exiting the room."go home, alex, you need to rest." y/n whined as my eyes started drooping. "i'll sleep here." i replied, standing up to grab her chart, looking at the pain meds she was currently having. "you're so awkward." she grumbled, reaching up to rub her eye before immediately retreating, avoiding the pain of touching it. "i thought you'd died, i wasn't planning on leaving you at all." i pointed out. "and i don't plan on leaving you now you're awake, okay?" i lectured, walking towards her. "okay." she huffed, rolling her eyes at me. i leant forward pressing my lips against hers. "i love you." i whispered, causing the woman's face to drop into an expression of shock. "what?" i asked, slightly concerned. "say it again." she smiled. "i love you." i repeated, getting into the bed with her. "i love you." she replied, as she rested her head against my chest, closing her eyes.
