the 40s- "peggy? what happened?" i asked, rushing to my best friend's side to comfort her. "steve's dead." she whispered, he body trembling as she sobbed. my shoulders dropped, as i felt my heart shatter, knowing that james was more than likely with him the whole time. "no.." i mumbled, pulling the woman into my embrace as the tears began to fall. i had lost an incredible friend, and the man i loved, and i felt as though my whole world had just come crashing down before me.
present day- "i dunno." i groaned, as myself and nat wandered through the compound. "do you have any idea what mission the boys went out on?" nat questioned, causing me to shrug in response as i took a bite out of the apple in my hand. "not a clue, but they're men. it takes men ages to do anything." i pointed out, plonking myself down on the sofa. nat chuckled, nodding in agreement at my statement. "i'm still pissed they didn't take us." she whined, seating herself next to me. "yeah well-" i was cut off by the commotion of everyone's return downstairs. "walk with me, buck. i'm not dragging you." i heard steve order, my eyes widening at the name. "tony, what happened?" nat asked, not realising my focus was purely on finding steve. "we'll speak as a group." he paused. "where's y/n?" he asked, knitting his eyebrows together. "she was right next to me." nat pointed out, swinging her head round to look for me, but i had already gone.
"steve?" i called, turning a corner to find him, along with sam and bucky all in the same room, bucky in a protective cell. "y/n? what are you doing in here?" steve asked, trying to move me away from the room. i shoved past him, my eyes scanning the man in front of me. "y/n, it's really not safe for you to-" i sent steve the daggers, silencing him as i walked towards the cell. "james?" i asked, placing a hand on the glass. he looked up, his eyes softening when i noticed it was me. "doll?" he whispered, but his speech was slightly echoed due to the cell. "what the hell happened to you?" i asked, as he stayed silent on the other side of the glass. i turned to steve. "open this thing, steve." i pleaded, the man keeping one facial expression the whole time. "you know i can't do that, y/n." he reasoned, crossing his arms across his chest. "let me in, and close it after." i suggested, practically begging the man. steve's face softened, as he walked towards the door, opening it for me. "be careful." he whispered before closing the door behind me.
bucky looked up at me, his face was bruised and bloody. i took in his appearance bit by bit, my eyes wandering to his arm, noticing the metal one that replaced it. "oh my god." i whispered, the red star on it answering so many questioned i needed the answers for. steve and sam never took their eyes off us, scared that something could go seriously wrong and get me killed. "hey, have you guys seen..what the hell is she doing in there with him?" tony hissed, steve sending him a dismissive signal as he kept his focus on the cell. bucky swallowed, watching my every move as i took in how different he looked. i sighed, leaning up to pull his taller figure down into my embrace, tony cursing at my actions behind the glass. "you changed, doll." he whispered, his body now relaxing into my embrace. "i had to." i mumbled into his shoulder, tears welling in my eyes, threatening to fall.
steve's pov- i watched as bucky's body melted into y/n's embrace. "you changed, doll." i heard him whisper to her. i walked towards the door, opening it. "what the hell are you doing?" tony ranted, causing y/n's attention to fall on me. "he's no longer a danger." i pointed out, pulling the door open to see bucky chewing his lip. "until someone says the words." he pointed out.
5 years later- after the blip things changed. tony sacrificed himself for everyone, and steve went back in time for peggy. now, it was just myself, bucky and sam. we had been working alongside zemo, and bucky despised the idea, but sacrifices had to be made. "doll, where are you?" bucky's voice rang through the phone. "yeah, good question." i sighed, taking in my surroundings, trying to work out where i was. "y/n?" i heard sam shouting. "wait, nevermind, i'm good." i chuckled, causing the man to grumble. "hey back to where we're staying." he asked before hanging up. "so he's mad?" sam laughed, pushing the door open. "i don't know why, i just didn't know where i was at that moment." i shrugged, being greeted with zemo in the kitchen and bucky sending us the daggers. "i'm gonna go watch some tv." sam chuckled, backing towards the door to another room, zemo hot on his heals. "what were you thinking?" bucky groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "i was lost for like two minutes, james, i'm fine." i pointed out. "you might not have been fine." he raised his voice. "don't raise your voice at me james. you have no reason to be mad." i shouted. "i don't want you dead." he sighed, sitting down. "i thought you were dead, for years. steve told us you were dead, so i had to try to accept that." i sat down at the end of the sofa. "you shouldn't be here right now." his voice was getting quieter. "neither should you." i pointed out, pulling my knees up to my chest. "what actually happened to you, y/n?" he asked, leaning back against the sofa. "i'm not having this conversation with you, bucky." i said, standing up. "we need to." he stood up too, walking towards me. "talk to me, y/n!" he grumbled. "i won't have this conversation with you james." "why?" he asked, moving closer to me. "because it hurts too much." i whispered, tears falling down my cheeks. bucky pulled me against his chest, slowly backing us towards the sofa, where he sat down, holding my body close to his. "it's okay, doll. it's okay." he whispered, soothingly, running his fingers through my hair and rubbing my back. "i'm sorry." i whispered, wrapping my arms around his torso. "you don't have to be." he replied, kissing the top of my head.
