SIXTEEN

"Are you sure it's safe to keep her in a hotel?" Somi asked as she, Jisoo and Lisa entered the elevator and hit the button for the top floor.

"More or less," Jisoo responds.

"More or less?"

"The entire top floor has been cleared and is strictly prohibited for hotel staff and guests. We have trained security outside her door at all times. It's as safe as it can be."

"The security at the hospital were trained too," Somi mutters.

"It's different this time. She won't try anything," Lisa interrupts.

"If you're sure."

"I am." Lisa pauses. "More or less."

Somi scoffs just as the elevator doors open onto the top floor. All three detectives are immediately asked to show their IDs.

"The only people who are authorised to be here are the three of us. It shouldn't be necessary often. Ruby Jane will be escorted each day to and from our department, but just in case, you should know what you're dealing with," Jisoo says as she leads them to a room that has two security men in front of the door. They are required to show their IDs one more time before they gain access to the room.

Being the first of the three to step into the room, Lisa's eyes quickly find Jennie's, who perks up on the bed and opens her mouth to say something, but Lisa shakes her head before she has the chance, just as Jisoo and Somi appear behind her.

"Ruby Jane, I hope everything is to your liking," Jisoo says as she walks around the room whilst scanning it.

"I did not like how I was just pulled from my sofa and shoved into a van with armed men without being told what was happening. You're lucky I have a bad arm," Jennie responds.

"Yes, I heard you caused some trouble, and despite your bad arm, you still managed to injure two of those armed men."

"That's your own fault. You can't expect me to just go willingly without even begin told what's happening. For all I know, those armed men could have been sent by The Black Hole."

"Well, count yourself lucky they were under orders to use non-violent methods to get you here. Next time, I assure you, you will be notified when are where we are moving you to."

"Hurray!" Jennie gives a sarcastic grin before averting her eyes to Somi. "Who are you?"

"Detective Jeon Somi. It's nice to finally meet you, Ruby Jane."

"Oh?" Jennie's eyes narrow in a way that Lisa knows all too well. "Have you heard a lot about me, Detective Jeon Somi?"

Lisa's own eyes narrow, in a different way, as she suddenly feels a surge of bitterness overcome her.

"We didn't come here to play your games," Lisa responds to Jennie before Somi has the chance.

"Games? I have no idea what you're talking about, Detective Manoban. I was simply being friendly to your colleague."

Jisoo rolls her eyes and steps closer to the bed. "Look, Ruby Jane, we only came to check on you and let you know that we are the only people who are authorised to see you or leave the hotel with you. If anyone else comes, you are to alert us immediately. I will personally escort you to and from the office every day and you have no other reason to leave this room. So, if that's all, we will see you tomorrow."

Jisoo turns to leave but Jennie speaks again. "But I'm so bored here by myself, and I tend to do stupid things when I'm bored."

Jisoo looks at Jennie, then at Lisa, then back at Jennie. She inhales deeply.
