NINE
The time in between Jennie's jobs was usually spent in Amsterdam, but as of late, she had taken a special interest in a particular Thai detective. However, since said detective was not in the country and Jennie had been warned by her handler to stay away from South Korea for a while, Jennie was back in Amsterdam.
There were not many people who stirred excitement within Jennie. It could be argued that before Lisa, no one did. Jennie found a thrill in her job. Watching the life drain from the eyes of her target as they took their last breath was a high Jennie believed she would be chasing for the rest of her life.
But her fellow assassin, Jeongyeon, was one of the only people who didn't utterly bore or annoy Jennie. At least, as long as she didn't spend too long with her.
Jennie had called ahead to check she wasn't on a job. Jeongyeon was surprised to hear from her; it must have been almost a year since they last spoke, but still, she sent Jennie the location where she wanted to meet. Jennie's interest was only slightly piqued; it was unusual for them to meet in a remote location, but either way, she trudged across the grass in her heels.
She's panting by the time she reaches Jeongyeon. "Why...on earth...are we in a...farm?" Jennie talks between breaths, approaching Jeongyeon from behind and getting her attention.
"We're not on a farm. This is a field."
Jennie shakes her head. "I saw some horsies back there." Jennie points behind her.
Jeongyeon looks to where Jennie is pointing before looking straight back to Jennie. "What happened to your face?"
The gash on Jennie's cheekbone has almost healed but is still visibly prominent. It sticks out like a sore thumb on her otherwise perfect skin. Jennie knew it would probably scar. She traces it gently with a smile.
"My girlfriend did it."
Jeongyeon stares at Jennie blankly for a long minute. "Your girlfriend? Me?" She asks, evidently confused.
"No, not you. My other girlfriend."
"Your girlfriend sliced your face open?"
"Romantic, isn't it?"
"In what sense?"
"It shows she cares about me," Jennie huffs, not liking Jeongyeon's tone.
"That doesn't... never mind." Even Jeongyeon knows when to stop as she catches the glint of frustration in Jennie's eyes. "They knew you were coming to me. They were the ones who told me to meet you here. They gave me a job and said you could help."
Jennie frowns. "Why would they do that? They know I don't work with people."
"I don't know. I don't question the orders. I just follow them." Jeongyeon reaches in her bag and pulls a paper out. "This is our target. A detective. She's based in South Korea but will be in Amsterdam any day now."
Jeongyeon flinches when Jennie snatches the picture from her hand. There's a thick minute of silence, and trepidation starts to emerge in Jeongyeon as she analyses Jennie's facial expression while she scans over the picture.
She can see how Jennie's jaw clenches just before the picture is crumpled up and thrown in her face.
"Is this some kind of sick joke?" There's a sharpness in Jennie's voice that slices through any form of alliance the two assassins had prior to this moment.
"What do you mean?" Jeongyeon almost stutters, taking a shaky step back when Jennie steps forward.
"Who gave you this kill?" Jennie's eyes are sharper than they were a few minutes ago, and all of a sudden she looked a lot more intimidating.
