Kendra – chapter 12
I straighten my dress, my hands weighting down with the golden rings and diamond decorated bracelets. The elegant silks fell to the ground in grace around me. I felt like an angel covered in so much white. Silver and golden necklaces hanged from my neck, they felt cold against my skin. the corset crushed my ribs, but the beauty of the dress distracted me. Thousands of maids surrounded me fixing the ribbons and powdering my face. Ally was doing my nails, and a tall maid with bright blue eyes was setting my hair. Thick luscious curls cascaded down to my waist. Half of my hair was placed in an elegant braid. Two strands of hair were out at the front moulding my face. The makeup felt heavy and weighted down my head. My cheeks were coloured the colour of blooming roses. a maid slowly lifted the heavy golden crown that was attached to a veil of the finest lace. I couldn't recognize the girl in the mirror. She was beautiful and looked happy. You couldn't tell that her heart was shattered, and she felt sick in the stomach. Ally smiled at me cheerfully. "it's your day, come on at least smile" she said joyfully. I smiled at her. She was warm hearted and kind. I would miss her presence and her comfort. I had never been so open to anyone as her. I imagined Caldor and how he would look. I felt a sliver of hope, at least he was good looking. Then and there I made my choice to smile and be happy. This was my day, even if I hated the groom at least most of the attention would be on me. And today was the day my father would hug me and walk me down the red carpet to the stage. I felt warm and fuzzy inside, my father had never hugged me before. Never. I wondered what it felt like.
Mother walked in smiling brightly she was wearing a tea – pink dress. It was decorated with tiny beads and diamonds. She looked to young and happy. I wonder if she felt sad, I was leaving. Her hair was placed in an elegant and straight forward bun and was decorated with Abraham Darby roses. she looked magnificent. She looked me up and down and nodded at Ally. Ally then left to get ready herself she would be my brides' maid; I had no other friends or siblings. The position suited her well. I however knew that many ladies would talk behind me about giving a maid such an important position. They all tried to flatter me and convince me to give them the position. I sheepishly excused them. I felt like a queen already. Mother didn't say much to me after though. She helped the maids place flowers in my braid. The job was tedious and took so long. After an hour Ally came back looking lovely, she was wearing a pastel blue dress and a beautiful necklace I had handed her on the day I asked her to be by my side. I hugged her tightly. She looked beautiful. Her soft hair was straightened and was left down.
I walked past the empty halls, even the guards had a break today. The main wedding was held in the courtyard and then there was a dance in the ballroom. My high heels clicked on the floor, announcing my every step. They were properly made by professionals so that they were high enough for me to be able to look Caldor in the eye. I smiled so bright my cheeks started burning. I felt magnificent and powerful. The décor caught my eye. Everything was so beautifully set not a detail out of place. There were white roses at every table in beautiful vases that were hand painted. Everybody was standing behind their seats that were draped in velvet bows and silk. I felt as if I had entered a fairy tale. Everything was beautifully placed. The stage was where Caldor stood, he was wearing a beautiful suit that suited him well. His hair was beautifully brushed, and his eyes shone in the sun. I took in a deep breath as I looked at Kalen who was in a fancy Guard suit a sash from his shoulders to his waist that was decorated with pins from his accomplishments. If only it was Kalen who stood at the stage maybe I would feel a tad bit better. Father came to me and hugged me tightly, his grip felt hard, and his heart felt cold. An act. What had I been expected? There were tears in his eyes, I told myself they were real, that he was happy, but I knew him to well. Eyes turned to us, and Caldor looked down happily. My face was covered with the veil and suddenly, I felt small. I squared my shoulders and tried to feel confident smiling brightly. Father looped his hand through mine and he walked me up the aisle. All eyes were on me, and I enjoyed it. Caldor reached for my arm and guided me up the steps. The silks made it so hard, but I made it look as elegant and possible. Whispers went up in the crowd. As I reached the stage the priest made his speech and Caldor had said yes. My throat hurt when I announced my answer, Caldor's eyes beamed with amusement and power. He lifted the veil eagerly and did as he was told by the priest. I merely was a figure Caldor played around with. His lips brushed against mine and I felt his greed and power over me. The crowd burst into applause, and I smiled at Caldor, and he returned a playful smile back at me. I glanced over at Kalen who kept his eyes on the floor.
