Kalen – chapter 19

We mostly joked around in the training room; it was a whole lot smaller than the one in Esmond. It seemed like we both needed a break from reality, talking to her made everything a whole lot better. It was like relief to find out that she was still the same, that the marriage didn't get to her head. She even made jokes about the wedding and how horrible Caldor's jokes were. I wanted to tell her that she was more than a friend to me, I wish I had told her before. Before she met Caldor, and all this happened. I wish I had told her that she was everything to me and I wanted her to not only stand beside me as a friend but as a lover to. Looking at her amber coloured eyes filled with tears of joy, I wanted to hug her and never let go. "Why are you looking at me like that?" Kendra questioned. I quickly straightened up and raised my eyebrows at her. Just tell her I thought to myself, but I didn't want to ruin her marriage with Caldor. She nudged me in the stomach and tilted her head to the side, demanding an answer. And that's when the interruption came, before I could open my mouth to tell her Caldor had walked in with that playful grin of his. He came and stood next to Kendra, and with a shake of his hand the guards had left us inside. Kendra's face went red. "doesn't seem like any training in going on in here, your swords are sheeted, and you both have skipped dinner" Caldor complained. I opened my mouth to speak but Kendra got her words out first. "Oh, we hadn't realised, and for your information he was explaining a stance to me" Kendra remarked. Caldor raised his eyebrows; he hadn't bought a word of what Kendra had told him. He let out a low sigh, and Kendra crossed her hands, waiting for his response. I felt like an intruder here, saying nothing standing like a block. "Oh really, because I heard quite a lot of laughter, whenever I passed by this room" he snapped back at her. He was jealous, I saw it in the way he glanced at Kendra then at me. "what's so wrong with laughing?" Kendra objected.

"Oh, nothing honey, I was just wondering what you to were up to, so I stopped by" Caldor announced. I had the sudden urge to leave right there, but then Caldor turned to speak to me. "Oh, and Kalen, I wonder if Kendra has already told you, we prepared a chariot for you, you will be going back to Esmond tomorrow" he sneered. I gave Kendra a confused glance, shock was written all over her face. she pushed Caldor in his chest so now he was facing her. "I never agreed to such thing, he is not going anywhere" she answered. She gave me an apologetic look, but I knew it was my turn to speak now I opened my mouth before Caldor could, "Please, I don't want you two to fight because of me, I will happily leave tomorrow if you want me to!" the words came out dry, and Caldor grinned, he looked back at Kendra to see if she would object and she did, " I will not be controlled by you Caldor, I have already told you so, Kalen will not leave, because here me out. If you lay a single finger on him, I will create such a ruckus that all your hard work, and pride will be demolished. I will get a divorce and your people will leave you if you ignore my rights anymore. I am most definitely not like any other court lady or slaves you have used in the past." She yelled at him in a confident tone. I heard the confused voices of passing ladies and men outside at her statement. She had just created a ruckus and there would be talk about what she had just declared. She was a strong woman and she proved to everyone she would not bow at their feet because of their power and position. Caldor was shocked and he raised his hand as to slap her. His hand swung in mid-air, and I grabbed his wrist with force inches away from Kendra she looked up at me and smiled softly. "I am her royal guard after all" I chuckled enjoying the power. "But if you lay a single hand on her again, your dead" I thundered as I threw his hand back to his side. He was shocked. Then Kendra walked out in orderly fashion, and I followed her hands behind my back, we could here the stream of curses that left Caldor's mouth. We walked to the dining room, scared, and confused glances greeted Kendra, the word had spread fast about what she had said.
