1944

You had known Steve since you were children, but your feelings for him had grown as you had grown older.

Steve, for his part, had revealed to you on more than one occasion that there was someone else in his life: Peggy Carter. Although you tried not to show it, every time Steve mentioned her name, a stabbing pain shot through your chest.

There were days when Steve seemed more distant, more lost in thought. You knew his mind was torn between his feelings for you and his feelings for Peggy.

One evening, you and Steve were walking in silence, until you came to a small bench near the lake.

"What are you thinking about, Steve? "you asked, breaking the silence. He sighed and sat down on the bench.

"A lot of things," he finally answered. What it all means... what I'm doing, what I want for my future.

"And have you come to any conclusions?

"I don't want to hurt you," he said softly. But I feel like I'm dragging you into a world you don't deserve.

"Steve, I'm here because I want to be because I care what happens to you.

Steve nodded slowly, but his gaze was fixed on the floor.

"Peggy means a lot to me too," he admitted.

You looked away, you knew that moment would come eventually, but you were never prepared to face it.

"And what does that mean for us? "you asked, your voice trembling a little.

"I don't know. I don't want to lose you, but I don't want to lie to you either. I don't want you to think you're a second choice, because you're not.

"Steve, I don't want to be an obstacle in your life," you said, tears threatening to spill from your eyes. If what you feel for Peggy is stronger, if she's the one who really makes you happy, then you should go that way.

"That's what I can't understand," Steve took your hand. Every time I'm with Peggy, I think of you. And when I'm with you, I feel like I'm betraying her. I don't know what to do.

You wanted to tell her to choose you, to leave Peggy in the past and build a future together. But you couldn't be selfish, you couldn't ask her to make a choice that would destroy him.

Finally, you let go of his hand and stood up from the bench, turning your back to him so he wouldn't see the tears falling.

"Steve, the choice is yours," you said. But whatever it is, I don't want you to feel obligated. You deserve to be happy, and if that means being with Peggy, then... then somehow I'll move on.

For a moment you thought he would just walk away, but instead, you felt his arms around you from behind, his forehead resting on your shoulder.

"I don't want to lose you," he whispered. I don't want to imagine my life without you.

"Steve... "You started, but he interrupted you, turning you around so you could look him in the eye.

"I mean it," he continued, "I never imagined my life without you. And I don't know if I could bear it.

Tears finally fell your cheeks, but this time you didn't hide them.

"Then don't go," you whispered. Stay with me, Steve. I'm not asking you to choose, just... just stay.

Steve nodded, his face reflecting the decision he had made.

"I'll stay," he promised.

"I'll stay," he promised
