The clock on the wall read three o'clock in the afternoon, but the day already felt endless. You had been looking forward to this conversation with Steve for days, but now that he was finally here, you wished you were elsewhere.
Steve was sitting in the chair across from you, hands clasped.
"I can't do this anymore," he said, his voice barely a whisper. You struggled to hear him.
Your heart skipped a beat. You had been feeling him distant for weeks now.
"Steve..." you started, but you didn't know what to say. How could you fight a ghost?
"I can't forget her," Steve continued, not looking you in the eye. "I've tried to move on, to be with you, but... every time I close my eyes, I see her face."
You felt the lump in your throat grow, but you had wanted to believe that Steve could put the past behind him and be happy with you in time.
"I'm sorry, can we rewind to the part where you're in love with me?!" you said, your voice trembling.
