XII. WATERWORKS

Madison sat in her bed and rubbed her eyes, groaning as the sun's light was shining brightly upon her face. She sat up, rolling over the side of her bed to check the clock, sighing as it read 9:55.

The previous night had been a blur, after nearly getting killed, her interaction with Liam, and then Scott finding a ton of money stashed in Garrett's locker. She remembered Scott telling her not to say anything just yet, and she respected his decision and kept her mouth shut.

She shuttered at the thought that money had been earned from killing innocent people. Innocent people like her friends and her family.

Madison gasped as her window creaked open, and she jumped out of bed. She adjusted the tank top hanging loosely on her shoulders, and her face fell in relief as she noticed the familiar face.

"Mason? What are you doing here?" She asked.

"Liam and I are going on a run. Wanna come?"

Madison looked at him and thought about it. Exercise would relieve some of her stresses and worries, yet on the other hand, she was still avoiding Liam so they wouldn't have to talk about the night before.

She felt it would be too awkward to say no, so she agreed with a tired grin etched upon her face.

After a couple of minutes of getting ready, Madison and Mason climbed out of her window. They would've taken the front door, but she didn't feel like explaining why she was leaving her house at 10 am to her father and Isaac. The pair quickly jumped to their feet as Madison looked down at her sneakers, moving the hair that had fallen in front of her face.

It wasn't too long afterward that the freshmen found themselves jogging in the woods. Madison had regretted going with them, her legs burning to keep up. Her muscles were sore from last night, and she wished that she would've let herself rest a bit more. She had barely uttered a word to Liam, feeling a lump pop in her throat every time she tried to speak. Mason was in between the two, his run at a decent pace while he spoke.

She listened to him ramble on about Garrett and Violet as she bit her lip harshly to keep herself from saying anything that would come back to bite her later. She could feel the light breeze cooling down her arms, squinting while the sun was in her face.

"They were using us for their cover. I mean, professional killers were using us. How are you not freaking out about that?"

"Trust me. I'm freaking out about a lot." Liam responded. Madison overlooked her shoulder to see him suddenly speeding up, leaving Mason and Madison behind.

"Liam, slow down," Mason shouted, his legs beginning to burn as he stopped running. "Liam!"

Mason's jog came to a halt, his hands resting atop his thighs as he inhaled deeply. Madison was glancing between both boys, concerned, as Liam was out of her line of sight. Her gaze flickered to Mason as he waved her off.
